Plant resources are naturally occurring substances that are considered valuable in their relatively unmodified (natural) form. The value of such resources rest in the amount of the material available and the demand for it. Both extraction of the basic resource and refining it into a purer, directly usable form are generally considered natural-resource activities, even though the latter may not necessarily occur near the former. Conservation and sustainable use of plant resources means an occurrence of improvement by virtue of preventing loss or injury and careful management of the plant resources. The management process includes optimum utilization of natural resources in a scientific manner for the betterment of man and environment and for sustainable development.Keywords

Cr, Pb, Zn, Cd, Ni, Cu, Co and Fe content in the surface sediments was studied at three sites along a 20 km stretch on the Bidyadhari River (situated at the gateway to Indian Sundarban mangrove ecosystem) starting from the sewage outfall zone of the Kolkata metropolis (northern limit of Sundarban) during the dry (March) and wet (August) seasons in the year 2011. The concentration levels of the heavy metals (mg kg-1) were in the following order: Fe (30399 ± 3679) > Cr (68.16 ± 39.28) > Zn (61.33 ± 10.47) > Ni (32.50 ± 4.79) > Cu (27.67 ± 6.59) > Pb (19.69 ± 5.20) > Co (15.23 ± 4.39) > Cd (1.70 ± 0.63). Computation of pollution load index comprising all the heavy metals was found higher during the wet season, mainly due to the enhanced surface run-off led by monsoonal rain. Concentrations of Cr and Co were found higher than the world average in a few cases (especially during wet season); however, computation of pollution indices like contamination factors, enrichment ratio and geoaccumulation index exhibited extremely high Cd contamination in all the sites and during both seasons.Keywords

The degree of heavy metal contamination was estimated in the river water, sediments and benthic organisms in the Kolkata metropolitan sewage outfall zone and downstream areas along the Kulti River track. Four heavy metals namely Cr, Pb, Zn and Cd were studied seasonally. The hierarchy of heavy metals in the water samples and sediments was found in the order Z>Pb>Cr>Cd and Zn>Cr>Pb>Cd respectively in most of the cases. Among the four heavy metals, Pb was found to be beyond the permissible limit recommended by Central Pollution Control Board of India for inland discharge. The extent of contamination by Cd is very prominent in the sediments followed by Pb, which is observed not only in the outfall region but also found persistent in the downstream stations. On the other hand contamination of Zn and Cr was not found to be widespread. Contamination in sediments of the outfall zone was most pronounced during the monsoon, while in the same season it was observed least in case of water samples. The pollution load index study revealed that the overall metal pollution load depleted towards the downstream. Among the two benthic organisms studied, metals were found to be accumulated more in Uca rosea than Boleopthalmus spp.Keywords

In Pilkhanas of North Bengal, slow decomposition rate of fiber rich elephant dung causes various serious problems of disposal. Dung-dump burning creates air pollution. Owing to the presence of Phenol crystals elephant dung is highly corrosive. Heaps of elephant dung form mosquito den. In this experiment, elephant dung has been used to prepare ‘vermicompost’ which has very high demand in tea-gardens, by using EM (Effective Microbes) solution and exotic earthworms like Eudrilus eugeniae, Eisinia fetida and indigenous earthworm like Perionix excavatus together with the use of indigenous bacteria and fungal culture that grows at the soil and dung interface . This experiment thus, not only helps in mitigating the management problems of pilkhana but also improves the socio-economic condition of local people so that they get interested about the implementation of this project.
