Ever increasing scientific and technological developments are opening new horizons into the exploration of space and ocean depths, nuclear power, advancements in construction, communication and transportation. The availability of newer and improved materials is responsible for the significant advances in the above mentioned areas. But without proper and reliable joining techniques, many of the advanced materials would remain laboratory curiosities. There are many methods for joining but welding is acknowledged to be the most satisfactory for most metal joining operations, the most efficient and sometimes the only possible method and will probably continue to be the main method of joining structural materials. This has given an additional incentive to develop readily weldable alloys such as low carbon low alloy steels, niobium and titanium stabilised stainless steels etc.

Lateral thinking is a unique form of thinking proposed by Edward De Bono. He believes that innovation is the ability to see the changes as an opportunity not as a threat. It results in the generation of new ideas and breaking out of the concept prisons of old ideas. This type of thinking decides the outcome of one's speaking and the job of lateral thinking is to enable the brain to find multiple possibilities or perceptions. The attitude of the present set of tertiary learners, lack of confidence and positive approach, their habits hinder their brain to intake, create and present the information in the demanding context. The major reasons for their inability are the cultural and psychological background of the learners. Developing lateral thinking skills of the tertiary level learners may pave the way to keep a constructive mind to acquire new language competencies. 'Think out of the box' is the crucial motto of the language teachers these days. De Bono's concept of Lateral thinking would enable the language teachers to break a new ground in inculcating speaking skills for the learners of English as a second language. The present study proposes Design, one of the lateral thinking techniques of Bono and its effectiveness as a tool that can be adapted by the language teachers to enrich the communicative competence of the tertiary level learners of English as a second language. The criteria for speaking activity are assessed based on stage III of Canadian Language Benchmark for assessing speaking skills.

Background/Objective: This paper presents a new digital control approach to track the Maximum Power Point (MPPT) for Potovoltaic (PV) systems. A photovoltaic power generation system requires an effective controller to overcome sudden changes to irradiance and to maximize its efficiency. Methods/Statistical Analysis: A new approach to MPPT based on voltage control was proposed, while a PI (Proportional Integral) controller was combined with the boost converter to adapt the duty cycle. Findings: The input voltage reference was adaptively perturbed with variable steps until the maximum power was reached. A state-space model was derived through the averaging method, with the control input being the duty ratio to regulate the pulse width modulator on the DC-DC boost converter. The proposed control scheme eliminated steady state oscillations around the working point area of the PV panel when there were rapid changes to the irradiance. Applications/Improvements: Furthermore, the PV system became more efficient, as proven by the sudden change in the radiation conditions for 0.3 seconds, where approximately 30% of energy could be saved.Keywords
