Abstract

Background: Premenstrual syndromes are the symptoms which occur during one week before menstruation and sometime symptoms are so severe enough to disturb life cycle of a women. She adopts different method to cope-up with problem.

Aim: Assess the premenstrual symptoms and coping behavior among adolescent. Methods: A descriptive study was conducted among adolescent girls at Government Higher Secondary School, Erode during the month of December 2013 to assess the premenstrual syndrome and coping behaviour among adolescent girls. A total 248 students from all classes were selected for collection of data. The questionnaire consisted of two parts. Part one is assessment of premenstrual syndrome and part two is for check list on coping behaviour.

Results: Majority (96%) students were having pain in lower abdomen, 93% were having difficulty in concentration, 87% had backache, pain in thighs& body ache. 83% of them had pain in breast and 81% were irritability and lower work performance and 78% were fluctuation of mood. Majority of student were using healthy coping strategies. i.e., 84% do not blame themselves for this problem, 71% accept it in healthy way that nothing can be done, 70% take hot or cold drinks. 64% do not express their anger on others. They accept it as a natural process as nothing can be done and try to cope up in healthy way.

Abstract

The eye is the window of the human body through which it feels its way and enjoys the beauty of the world, but as age rises elderly people develop visual problems by showing the symptoms like blurred vision, visual defect, fore sight and short sight, etc, which blocks the beauty of eye sight.

Objectives: To determine the effectiveness of Bates therapy on visual problems among elderly residents.

Design: Pre-experimental design where one group pre and post test.

Setting: K.K Illam home for aged, Erode.

Participants: Elderly residents who fulfilled the inclusion criteria.

Selection Criteria: The inclusion criteria of the elderly residents Who can read three lines on snenell's chart without spectacles at a distance of 6 meters with both eyes, see superiorly 30°, laterally 50°, inferiorly 50° and medially 40° with both eyes and their Pupillary size to light 2mm for both eyes.

Methods: 38 elderly residents were selected by using consecutive sampling technique. Pre and post test assessment done by using visual acuity assessment scale and visual functioning scale to assess the visual problems.

Results: The study findings showed that 7(47%) were in the age group 60-65 and 66-70 years respectively. However 67% them were females, 60% of them had diabetes Mellitus, all (100%) had less than 20 years of visual problems, 60% of them using spectacles below 10 years and 67 % of them had twice in a year eye check up. Paired 't' test value was 12.24 in visual acuity and 11.23 in visual functioning when compared to the level of significant (p<0.05) it was high. It seems that Bates therapy on visual problems among elderly people was effective. There is no significant association between post test scores on visual problems among elderly people and their demographic variables (age, gender, associated disease conditions, duration of visual problems and duration of using spectacles).

Conclusion: Eye exercise is given to any kind of eye problems to improve vision. Therefore Bates therapy was very beneficial for elderly people to regain their eyesight back.

Clinical Practice: To prove Bates therapy, they need supportive research to be warranted. As a part of nursing care service, Bates therapy can be implemented to the clients in the hospital and community settings.

Abstract

Background: Osteoarthritis is the most common cause of rheumatological problem and is most frequent joint disease with high prevalence in India among geriatric clients. This is the most common cause of loco motor disability in the elderly population.

Objectives: To assess the effectiveness of selected nursing strategies Vs acupressure on osteoarthritis among geriatric clients.

Design: Two group pretest and post test true experimental design was adopted for the study.

Setting: Selected old age homes in Tamilnadu.

Participants: 30 Geriatric clients with Osteoarthritis fulfilling the inclusion criteria were selected by cluster random sampling.

Methods: A pretest was conducted by using WOMAC scale and EQ-5D, QOL assessment scale. Immediately after pre-test selected nursing strategies Vs acupressure was given for 8 weeks and again post test was conducted to assess the effectiveness of treatment. Collected data was analyzed by using descriptive and inferential statistics.

Results: In post mean score of the experimental group I mean score was 55.40(SD=12.60) and the group II mean score was 65.40(SD=10.53). This showed that the selected nursing strategies was effective than acupressure in enhancing the practice of the sample regarding Osteoarthritis and the quality of life of geriatric clients.

Conclusion: The findings imply the need for educating geriatric clients on effective management of Osteoarthritis.

Background: Awareness of surroundings during intraoperative period is a well known stressor for the surgical patients, especially spinal anesthesia patients. Apart from the sedative agents, video therapy can be used as a supportive therapy to reduce the level of anxiety among patients under spinal anesthesia.

Objectives: To assess the effectiveness of intra operative video therapy on anxiety among patients under spinal anesthesia.

Design: Quasi-experimental design, where Pretest Posttest Nonequivalent Group design, Setting: Valli hospital, Erode, Tamilnadu.

Participants: Thirty patients under spinal anesthesia fulfilling the inclusion criteria. Selection criteria: Patients undergoing spinal anesthesia for the surgeries like fistulectomy, hemorrhoidectomy, hernia repair, appendicectomy and fissurectomy, with the age group of 20-60 years and both gender were included. Patients with hearing and visual impairment, sedation, spinal anesthesia converted to general anesthesia and unstable vital parameters were excluded.

Methods: Out of 30 patients, 15 patients were selected as experimental group and 15 patients were selected as control group by convenient sampling technique. Experimental group were shown video-therapy by using portable DVD player with the head phone, instead of using eye pad (control group). Level of anxiety was measured by Spielberger State Anxiety Inventory (STAI-S) before and after the procedure.

Results: The results show that most of the patients under spinal anesthesia were male, non medical workers, and undergone fissurectomy, fistulectomy and hemorrhoidectomy surgeries and most of their surgeries had completed in less than an hour. In posttest, 53% had no/low anxiety in control group, whereas 87% had no/low anxiety in experimental group. The patient's level of anxiety reduced from the mean value of 36.33±8.96 and 35.67±7.78 to 34.33±8.06 and 28.07±5.54 in control and experimental group respectively. Paired 't' test score was 10.43 and unpaired 't' test score was 2.42, which is significantly effective at P<0.05. Chi square test showed only trait anxiety in control group and duration of surgery and trait anxiety in experimental group have significant association (P<0.05) and other demographic variables (age, gender, name of surgeries, previous history of surgery, occupation) have no significant (P>0.05) association with post test score of level of anxiety in both control and experimental group.

Conclusion: Video therapy is an effective intervention to reduce the level of anxiety among patients under spinal anesthesia.

Abstract

Background: The behaviour develops from intrauterine period itself. Each stage of development the child is learning from the parents, peer groups and the environment. These are the factors which influence the behaviour of the children.

Objectives: To assess the knowledge of preschool behavioural problems among mothers. Design: A cross - sectional descriptive design was adopted for the study.

Setting: Kollapatti Village, Namakkal District.

Participants: 30 mothers fulfilling the inclusion criteria were selected by purposive sampling technique.

Methods: All participants were given a questionnaire to complete; questions were related to Baseline Proforma of mothers and standard questionnaire on behavioural problems administered 20 - 25 minutes to complete the questionnaire.

Results: The findings revealed that Knowledge of mothers shows that 80% of the mothers having inadequate knowledge and 20% of them having moderately adequate knowledge on behavioral problems. There is no significant association between selected demographic variables and level of knowledge on preschool behavioural problems among mothers (P > 0.005).

Conclusion: Mothers are having was very poor knowledge regarding behavioural problems. There is a need to educate parents on behaviour of children and the significance of behavioural deviations.

Background: Reproductive health is affected by a variety of socio cultural and biological factors on the one hand and the quality of the delivery system and its responsiveness to women's needs on the other. A woman-based approach to reproductive health is one which responds to the needs of adult women and adolescent girls in a culturally sensitive manner.

Objectives: Identify The Common Reproductive Health Problem among women.

Design: A Descriptive research design was adopted for the study. Setting: Selected weaving mill, Namakkal District.

Participants: 75 women with fulfilling the inclusion criteria were selected by purposive sampling.

Methods: All women were asked the questionnaire through interview method. The questions were related to Baseline Proforma of women and common reproductive health problems assessment check list. Each participants 20-25 minutes to complete the questionnaire.

Results:The reproductive health problems assessment check listrevealed that the majority (30%) of the samples had menstrual problem and similar percentage (16% and 16%) of samples had anaemia and breast infection respectively. There was a no significant association between the reproductive health problems scores and variables like age, age at menarche, duration of cycle, type of flow, problems during menstruation, family history of reproductive health problems, and source of information. (P > 0.05).

Conclusion: The knowledge about reproductive health problems of the women to be reinforced to lead a happy and healthy life.

In India is one of the largest producers of alcohol in the world and there has been a steady increase in its production over the last 15 years, according to new statistics. The problem of excessive alcohol consumption is a major cause of public health concern in most countries of the world today .Heavy consumption, which involves for more than dependence, can cause undoubted misery to individual, who is usually affected by other physical, psychological, and social disabilities as well.

Objectives: co-relate co -dependency and depressive symptoms among wives of alcoholics

Design: descriptive research design.

Setting: VK hospital and Nallandha de addiction centre, Erode

Participants: 30 wives of alcoholics with fulfilling the inclusion criteria were selected by purposive sampling.

Methods: Codependency scale and Center for Epidemiologic Studies Depression scale (CES - D) are used to collect the data from wives of alcoholics.

Results: From the findings of the study it can be concluded that the most of them were in the age group of 41 -50 years, Hindus, joint family, belongs to Conjugal marriage, living with husband for above 10 years, had 3 children's, had secondary education, house wife, family income belongs to 10,000 - 15,000, consuming alcohol for above 6 years and had history of parents. Most (90%) of them were high co dependency and Most (94%) of them were mild depression. The Co - dependency mean score was (56.8 ± 7.31), which is 81% and Depressive symptoms mean score was (37.8 ± 8.01), which is 47%. Co-relation between co - dependency and depressive symptoms scores was (0.9) highly positive relationship between these variables. No significant association between the co - dependency and depressive symptoms scores of wives of alcoholics when compared to demographic variables. Conclusion: The aim of the study was to assess the co - dependency and depressive symptoms among wives of alcoholics. It was found that there is a positive co - relation between co - dependency and depression.

Abstract

Background: Every pregnant woman experiences stress of some sort, whether it is financial fears or just how to assemble the crib correctly. These sorts of stress are common during pregnancy. But some women suffer extreme stress during pregnancy. Pregnancy is an experience full of growth changes, enrichment and challenges. It is a time of fear and expectation about becoming mother. Around 80% women experience these symptoms.

Objectives: To assess the effectiveness of Benson's relaxation on stress among antenatal mothers.

Design: Pre experimental one group pre and posttest design was adopted for the study. Setting: VK hospital and TPN hospital, Erode. Participants: 30 antenatal mothers fulfilling the inclusion criteria were selected by convenient sampling.

Methods: A pretest was conducted by using Perceived Stress Scale. Immediately after pretest. Benson's relaxation was given one time (15 = 20 minutes) a day for 30 days and 31stday post test was conducted to assess the effectiveness of Benson's relaxation. Collected data was analyzed by using descriptive and inferential statistics.

Results: In pretest, the mean score of the sample was 22.3 (SD= 1.34)) and the posttest mean score was 12.2 (SD = 0.72) with paired 't' value of 10.32. This showed that the Benson's relaxation was effective on reducing the stress among antenatal mothers. There was a statistically no significant association found between the post test scores of the sample with their demographic variables.

Conclusion: It seems that teaching pregnant women on relaxation could be effective in mother and her children. Therefore, attention should be paid to different methods for reducing stress in this group of mothers. Benson's relaxation is a non-pharmacological, cost effective and simple intervention without any adverse effects. The results proved that the Benson's relaxation was effective in reducing the stress among antenatal mothers.

Abstract

Background: Breastfeeding has a major role to play in public health, promoting health in both the short and long term for baby and mother. Breast feeding is a significant component of this dependency, so that the initiation of breast feeding must rank as one of the earliest and most important post partum decisions made by both the mother and her child in the newly modified and postpartum relationship.

Objectives: Identify The Risk Factors For Initiation Of Breast Feeding Among Caesarean Mothers.

Design: A Descriptive research design was adopted for the study. Setting: Government head quarters Hospital, Erode. Participants: 50 Caesarean mothers with fulfilling the inclusion criteria were selected by purposive sampling.

Methods :All participants were asked the questionnaire through interview method. The questions were related to Baseline Proforma of caesarean mothers and risk factors assessment check list on initiation of breast feeding. Each participants 20 -25 minutes to complete the questionnaire.

Results :The risk factors of initiation of breast feeding based on Risk factors Assessment scale revealed that the majority (78%) of the samples had mild risk and 22% of mothers had moderate risk factors. There was no significant association between the risk factors of initiation of breast feeding scores and variables like age, education, occupation, Religion, Family Income, Residence, Parity, and Frequency of antenatal visit (P > 0.05).

Conclusion: Surgical wound pain and discomfort in position are highly affecting the caesarian mothers' initiation of breast feeding. To gain the full benefits of breastfeeding for child health and nutrition, there is an urgent need to develop interventions to improve the rates of exclusive breast-feeding.

Abstract

Background: Premenstrual syndrome (PMS) is used to describe physical, cognitive, affective and behavioural symptoms that occur cyclically during the luteal phase of the menstrual cycle and resolve quickly at or within a few days of the onset of menstruation. It affects half of all female adolescents today and represents the leading cause of periodic college/school absenteeism among that population.

Objectives: To assess the effectiveness of SIM on premenstrual syndrome among adolescents.

Design: A one group pre test and post test Pre experimental design was adopted for the study.

Setting: Selected area, Erode.

Participants: 40 adolescent girls with fulfilling the inclusion criteria were selected by purposive sampling.

Methods: A pre test was conducted by using knowledge questionnaire related to premenstrual syndrome. Immediately after pre test self instructional module was given to the adolescent girls to read about the premenstrual syndrome for 7 days and 8^th day post test was conducted to assess the effectiveness of SIM. Collected data was analysed by using descriptive and inferential statistics.

Results : In pre test , the mean score of the sample was 6.73 and the post test mean score was 23.54 with Paired't' value of 21.82. This showed that the SIM was effective in enhancing the knowledge of the adolescent girls regarding premenstrual syndrome. There was a statistically no significant association found between the post test scores of the sample with their demographic variables.

Conclusion: The findings imply the need for educating adolescent girls on effective management of premenstrual syndrome. Education should be extended to parents and school peer leaders to address the reproductive health needs of adolescents.

Abstract

Background: Pre-menstrual syndrome (PMS) is recurrent variable cluster of troublesome physical and emotional symptoms that develop 7-14 days before the onset of menstruation and subsides when menstruation occurs.

Objectives: To assess the prevalence of pre-menstrual syndrome among adolescent girls. Design: A cross - sectional descriptive design was adopted for the study.

Setting: Seventh Day Adventists School, Erode.

Participants: 200 adolescent girls fulfilling the inclusion criteria were selected by Stratified sampling technique.

Methods: All participants were given a questionnaire to complete; questions were related to Baseline Proforma of adolescent girls and checklist on the common premenstrual symptoms, participants were given 20 minutes to complete the questionnaire.

Results: The findings revealed that the majority (54%) of the samples had mild PMS, 28% as moderate and 18% of them had severe PMS. There was a significant association between the prevalence of PMS scores and variables like age ( χ² = 4.51 , p > 0.05) and school absenteeism ( χ²= 6.62 , p > 0.05). But there was no significant association with prevalence of PMS among adolescent girls and other variables like age at menarche, duration of cycle, type of flow, family history of PMS, academic performance and source of information.

Conclusion: PMS is highly prevalent among female students. Maximum participants do not seek medical advice and taking self treatment.

Abstract

Background: Dysmenorrhea is the most common of gynecologic complaints. It affects half of all female adolescents today and represents the leading cause of periodic college/school absenteeism among that population.

Objectives: To assess the effectiveness of ginger powder on dysmenorrheal symptoms among adolescents.

Design: A one group pre test and post test Pre experimental design was adopted for the study.

Setting: Seventh Day Adventists School, Erode.

Participants: 30 adolescent girls with dysmenorrhoeal symptoms fulfilling the inclusion criteria were selected by convenient sampling.

Methods: A pre test was conducted by using menstrual symptoms assessment scale. Immediately after pre test 1 gm ginger powder was given two times a day for 7 days and again post test was conducted to assess the effectiveness of ginger powder. Collected data was analysed by using descriptive and inferential statistics.

Results : In pre test , the mean score of the sample was 65.12 (SD= 8.74)) and the post test mean score was 43.24 (SD = 6.72) with Paired't'value of 23.02.This showed that the ginger powder was effective in enhancing the practice of the sample regarding dysmenorrhoeal symptoms. There was a statistically no significant association found between the post test scores of the sample with their demographic variables.

Conclusion: The findings imply the need for educating adolescent girls on effective management of dysmenorrhoea. Education should be extended to parents and school peer leaders to address the reproductive health needs of adolescents.
