- Comparison of Quality of Life in off-pump Versus on-pump Coronary Artery bypass Graft (CABG) Patients before and after Phase II Cardiac Rehabilitation

Background and purpose: Coronary artery Bypass Graft (CABG) is the commonly performed revascularization procedure after a major vessel block. Many studies have indicated that there is a reduction in Quality of Life after CABG. The aim of our study was to compare the Quality of Life (QOL) in off pump and on pump CABG patients before and after phaseII Cardiac rehabilitation and to find out the effectiveness of cardiac rehabilitation to improve the QOL.Materials and Methods: The QOL of 50 patients consisting of two groups were studied on two different occasions before phase II cardiac rehabilitation and after Phase II cardiac rehabilitation respectively by using SF-36v2 questionnaire.
Results: 50 patients with the mean age 47.9 years, (range 40-58) completed the study. Following the cardiac rehabilitation there was a marked improvement in the QOL of both the groups, and the physical and mental components scores in the SF-36v2 questionnaire were increased. The difference between the scores of off pump and on pump CABG was significant before phase II cardiac rehabilitation. Conclusion: The QOL was seen to increase significantly after 3 months of structured cardiac rehabilitation program(comprising of Phase I and Phase II cardiac rehabilitation) in both on pump and off pump CABG patients .There were significant changes in the all the 8 domains in the SF-36v2 questionnaire in both groups before and after Phase II cardiac rehabilitation, but there was no significant difference in QOL between on pump and off pump CABG subjects after Phase II cardiac rehabilitation program.
