Abstract

This study analyzes the characteristic pattern of land-use and land cover (LULC) changes in Khulna city, Bangladesh. The study used spatial data (Landsat Satellite Images) of Khulna city to identify the nature of LULC change. Four LULC types are classified in this study namely - ‘river’, ‘vegetation’, ‘canal and artificial pond’, and ‘built-up and construction land’. The classification of these LULC types was done by following supervised classification method. Based on these classifications, two change matrices were prepared for detecting LULC change between the periods of 2000-2007, and 2007-2014. The outcomes of the study indicated that ‘river’, ‘canal and artificial pond’ and ‘vegetation’ decreased by 1.67%, 76.57%, and 7.33% from 2000 to 2007 and by 4.49%, 13.64%, and 15.81% from 2007 to 2014, respectively. On the other hand, from 2000 to 2007, built-up and construction land increased by 102.46% and 37.81% from 2007 to 2014. A bivariate plot matrix was developed among the LULC types to understand the internal correlation among the LULC types. It is noticed that there were strong negative correlation between ‘river’ and ‘built-up area’ (-0.943); ‘canal’ and ‘built-up area’ (-0.919); and ‘vegetation’ and ‘built-up area’ (-0.963). On the other hand, strong positive correlation noticed to ‘river’ and ‘canal’ (0.736); ‘river’ and ‘vegetation’ (0.998); and ‘canal’ and ‘vegetation’ (0.779). From this study, it is clear that the changes of ‘built-up area’ and ‘canal and artificial pond’ occurred quickly. On the other hand, ‘vegetation’ changed moderately and ‘river’ changed slowly compared to other LULC types for the same time period.
