Herbicide mixtures are commonly used in agriculture to broaden the spectrum of weed control. The interactions or the combinations may be desirable or undesirable. Acetachlor at 150g/ha applied and ready mix application of anilofos and ethoxysulfuron at 780 g/ha provide effective control of weeds with higher grain yield. Tank mix application of metribuzin with isoproturon at 1.0 kg/ha, clodinofop (60g/ha) and fenoxyprop (120g/ha) applied at 3 leaf stage marginally increase the mortality against the resistant biotypes and susceptible biotypes of Phalaris minor with the corresponding increase in the dose of metribuzin. Tank mixing of MON 12000, CGA 152005 with atrazine or bentazon reduces the weed control of these post-emergence herbicides, in controlling velvetleaf. Chlorimuron is compatible with glyphosate, but aciflurofen antogonise glyphosate activity. Thus the interaction effect of herbicide molecule differed.- BT Cotton Hybrids in India - A Review

Cotton 'White Gold' is an important commercial crop. The major threat to cotton production is its higher susceptibility to pests especially bollworms. Globally, the maximum amount of pesticides was consumed by cotton alone. But nowadays, chemical pesticides miserably failed to check the menace of bollworms in cotton system. Bollworms have developed resistance to most of the potent pesticides. To combat this problem, transgenic Bt cotton has been developed which evokes inbuilt resistance in host and offers protection against bollworms. Application of insecticides in Bt cotton should be based on scouting and thresholds. Bt endotoxin, the insecticidal crystal cry protein efficiency differs on various factors like varieties, season, crop age, environment and management practices like amount of nitrogenous fertilizers applied etc. Bt cotton was found to be safer to human and animal kind.- Weeds and Weed Control in Dryland Agriculture - A Review

The traditional cropping leads to a high degree of uncertainty in yield, income and employment under dryland conditions. The integrated farming system approach introduces a change in the farming techniques for maximum productivity in farming by optimal utilisation of resources. Judicious mix of agricultural crops and other enterprises suited to the given agroclimatic condition and socio-economic status of the farmer would improve the prosperity in the farming. The present day trend towards sustainable agriculture encourages the utilisation of residue and waste materials of crop and its allied activities for enrichment of soil nutrients, water retention to protect the enviromnent over a long period. Field experiments were conducted during kharif and rabi 2000 to study the influence of short duration grain legumes (cowpea and greengram) on the productivity of succeeding finger millet under rainfed conditions. Results revealed that maximum dry matter production and vegetable yield was obtained in cowpea (CO 2), as compared to greengram (Pusa bold). In succeeding finger millet crop, higher grain and straw yield were obtained when the haulms of previous cowpea were incorporated after harvest for vegetable purpose. Herbal leaf powders of Ocimum basilicum, Vitex negundo and Azadirachta indica each at 10 percent (w/w) concentration were mixed with cowpea seeds and stored under ambient storage condition in cloth bags. The efficacy of Azadirachta and Vitex were the highest in suppressing oviposition of Callosobruchus spp and maintaining viability of seeds in cowpea cv. CO 6 up to 6 months and could be recommended as a better alternative to the chemical seed treatments.Keywords

The bacteria Streptomyces sp. was isolated from the seaweed Sargassum myriocystum that was collected from Kilakarai, Ramanathapuram District, Tamil Nadu. Among the isolates, the SNAJSM6 produced the maximum content of extracellular α-amylase, which was conformed by starch hydrolysis and identified as Streptomyces sp. SNAJSM6. The culture optimization studies for augmented enzyme production in the Streptomyces sp. were conducted under different physicochemical parameters, such as pH, temperature, and carbon and nitrogen sources for α-amylase production. The maximum α- amylase production was recorded on the third day of incubation (56U/ml) by Streptomyces sp. SNAJSM6. The Streptomyces sp. optimized α-amylase enzyme production was recorded at pH 7.0 and temperature 30 °C, which was 1.86 fold higher than the unoptimized culture broth of the Streptomyces sp. The Streptomyces sp. α-amylase enzyme was partially purified and its molecular weight was found to be 44 kDa by using SDS-PAGE. Among the isolates that were screened, Streptomyces sp. SNAJSM6 is a potential candidate for maximum production of α-amylase. Further, it showed excellent antibacterial activity against selected human pathogens.Keywords
