Abstract

The optimal design of skeletal structure becomes imperative both from engineering and cost considerations in recent year. Total cost of the structure mainly depends on weight of the structure and weight of the structure is proportional to material distribution within the structure.The aim of study is to achieve minimum weight of the structure under nodal displacement, stress and stability constrains. This paper deals with linear static analysis and topology optimization of the skeletal structure with two noded line elements as a non linear problem. Optimization of 6 noded, 11 member 2D benchmark truss problem is carried out, in order to find out best distribution of material between the nodes after satisfying all constrains to achieve the minimum weight of the structure. Comparison of the displacement and weight with benchmark problem is studied.Optimization has performed with the help of Hyper Work computer program tool and iteration obtained after topology optimization is discussed.

Abstract

In design of truss effect of wind forces is predominant to calculate the member forces. To achieve the economical mass production of trusses Indian government assigned some restrictions or parameters to production of industrial truss under the project of B-8. The paper presents comparative study between design of truss as per revised provisions of wind load calculations given in IS875:1987 with the design obtained as per calculations made in SP-38(S&T):1987; Handbook for typified designs for structures with steel roof trusses. The analysis is carried out on a 12 m span A-type truss and the forces are calculated with the help of ANSYS 11.0. IS875:1987(part 3) considers terrain, class of structure, topography factor, different permeability condition depending on slope of structure which are not considered in SP-38(S&T):1987; Hand book for typified designs for structures with steel roof trusses. The calculations show that there is a considerable variation of member forces as the span of truss increases. The percentage variation of member forces in 24 m span truss is nearly double that in 12 m span truss.

Abstract

Geopolymer concrete is one of the green concrete. It becomes a solution on social environmental problems, such as disposal of fly ash produced by thermal power plants and the air pollution due to production of cement. Geopolymer concrete is very advantageous due to its durability, economy and environmental credit point of view. The Geopolymer requires the temperature curing for obtaining the sufficient strength. Practically it is impossible to produce the temperature curing to structure at site. Due to that this concrete is only useful for construction of precast members in industry. If geopolymer concrete attains the required strength at room temperature this will be the boon to society for saving the environment. Some effort is made in this direction for achieving the sufficient strength of Geopolymer cure at room temperature. The various percentages of Lime and OPC were added in fly ash for obtaining the strength at room temperature. The effect of lime and OPC on initial setting time and compressive strength were studied. From this experimental work it is observed that increase in the percentage of lime and OPC the initial setting time reduces as the compressive strength increases. In case of strength the Geopolymer mix incorporated with OPC gives the better results of strength as compared to the mix with lime.
