This paper examines the quality of groundwater in a 40 sq km region comprising Osmania University and surrounding areas in the north eastern part of Hyderabad city in India. 171 groundwater samples from bore wells in the region have been analyzed for ionic concentrations of K+, Na+, Ca2+, Mg2+, F-, Cl-, SO4 2-, HCO3 - and NO3 2-. Parameters such as pH, total hardness (TH), total dissolved solids (TDS), sodium absorption ratio (SAR), permeability index (PI), residual carbonate (RC), electrical conductance (EC) and groundwater quality index (GWQI) have been evaluated, contoured and analyzed to determine the areas of contaminated groundwater. It is inferred from Wilcox plot and Piper trilinear diagram, the samples in the study area falls under C3S1 class and characterized by alkaline. It was found the groundwater in the entire region is too hard for drinking. Groundwater contamination in the study area is attributable to different sources; in the southern part of the study area, it is due to proximity to the river Musi that acts as a carrier of domestic and industrial effluents. In and around Nacharam and Mallapur, the effluents discharged from the several industries are responsible for polluting the groundwater in the region. Regions such as Jamai Osmania, Lallaguda and Lalapet are very densely populated and it is the domestic sewage in this area that is the primary cause of groundwater contamination. Keywords

Regional gravity investigations were carried out in the northern part of Dharwar craton along a 600 km long Jadcharla-Raichur-Gadag-Hubli-Dharwar-Goa transect to obtain a clearer perception of the deep geological structure and to throw light on some of the debatable aspects such as the contact between the eastern and western Dharwar cratons From qualitative analysis of the horizontal and vertical gradients and analytical signal amplitude computed from the Bouguer gravity, the boundaries of the supracrustals were delineated
The polynomial fitting technique was used to obtain the regional (long wavelength component of Bouguer gravity) to infer deep-seated features The 5th order polynomial fit of the anomaly curve was modeled wlth GM-SYS software to obtain the crustal structure along the transect From the crustal upwelling/downwarps as indicated by modeling and the first horizontal gradient of regional Bouguer gravity the locations of four deep seated faults were determined Running west to east, the first of these, the west coast fault,is located near Ponda at station 34 The second, third and fourth faults, situated at stations 198, 307 and 530, correspond to the Bababudan-Nallur shear, the western margin of the Closepet batholith and the Makthal schist belt, respectively The structural configuration so obtained, contrary to established hypotheses of the geological classification of the craton into the eastern and western blocks, prompted to a modified tectonic classification of the craton into the western, an upthrust intervening, and eastern Dharwar blocks, whlch provided a new insight in to the structural configuration of the area While the average crustal thickness obtained for the western and eastern Dharwar blocks are 39 Km and 37 km respectively, the crustal thickness beneath the Chitradurga thrust fault, which lies in the middle of the intervening block IS 34 5 km.

Semi-Detailed gravity surveys were carried out over an area of approximately 1500 Sq km in and around Makthal(Mahboobnagar district, Andhra Pradesh) in the eastern Dharwar craton to evaluate the structural configuration of the region. Two major, linear deep-Seated faults, one running NW-SE and the other N-S, and several other lineaments were identified from the qualitative analysis of the Bouguer gravity data. The zones of intersection of these structural trends which could have acted as potential sites for kimberlite emplacement, were accordingly delineated.
The near surface as well as deep crustal configuration in the region was obtained via the inversion of a NE-SW trending gravity profile obtained by digitizing the Bouguer gravity contour map. From the disposition of the crustal layers, a total of five faults were inferred, revealing the structural configuration of the region. These faults were found to correlate well with faults/Lineaments inferred from qualitative analysis.

The Dharwar craton constitutes part of one of the most significant Precambrian shields in the world. Different episodes of deformation undergone by the craton make it difficult to decipher its complex geology. Density studies were conducted along the Jadcharla-Goa subtransect (820 samples), which cuts across the northern part of the craton to understand the geological nature of the region as well as provide a sound base for gravity surveys. Modal densities of 2.65 gm/cc, 2.92 gm/cc and 2.57 gm/cc were obtained for the three major constituents in the region - peninsular gneisses, schists and Closepet granites, respectively. Application of the Kolmogorov-Smimov statistical test on samples from the western and eastern Dharwars along the transect as a whole, as well as from Gadag (western Dharwars) and Makthal (eastern Dharwars) areas indicated that they differed in density values, suggesting they belonged to different population distributions. This, in the light of recent contrary studies, lends support to the concept of division of the Dharwar craton into two groups. Keywords

The Archaean-Proterozoic Dharwar craton has many recorded occurrences of diamondiferous kimberlites. Reports of kimberlite emplacement in parts of the tectonically complex eastern Dharwar craton and a significant density contrast between kimberlites and the host peninsular gneisses motivated us to conduct gravity studies in the Narayanpet-Irladinne area of the eastern Dharwar craton. This region is contiguous with the Maddur-Narayanpet kimberlite that lies to its north, while the river Krishna lies to its south.
From observed association of reported kimberlites in the Maddur-Narayanpet field with subsurface topography of the assumed three-layer earth section obtained by Bouguer gravity modelling, we developed a subsurface criterion for occurrence of kimberlites in the present study area. Using this criterion, five potential zones for kimberlite localization were identified in the Narayanpet-Irladinne region, eastern Dharwar craton.
