- Protective Effect of Trianthema portulacastrum Linn Leaves on Gentamicin Induced Nephrotoxicity in Rats

Objective: To evaluate the nephro protective effect of ethanolic extract of Trianthema portulacastrum leaves in gentamicin induced renal damage in rats. Materials and methods: The nephro protective activity of ethanolic extract of T.portulacastrum leaves was evaluated against gentamicin induced renal damage in rats. Various biochemical parameters were assessed and histopathological section of the kidney was taken. The protective effect was further studied from analyzing the potential of the extract to scavenge the free radicals. Results: i.p administration of ethanolic extract of T.portulacastrum restored the levels of the biochemical factors determined significantly and exhibited a significant potential to scavenge free radicals with respect to control. Conclusion: The ethanolic extract of T.portulacastrum exhibited significant (P< 0.001) nephro protective activity.Keywords

Cloud computing is used to store the data and provide the service of on demand applications without any maintenance. There is no need of longer physical maintenance for the data. Moreover, users should be able to just use the cloud storage as if it is local, without worrying about the need to verify its integrity. Public auditability plays the major role for cloud storage. A Third-Party Auditor (TPA) can check the integrity of outsourced data and be worry free. To securely introduce an effective TPA, the auditing process should take in no new vulnerabilities toward user data privacy, and introduce no additional online burden to user. Here cloud storage system is used for the auditing purpose. It should be useful for the multi users. This design should be mainly used for the fast performance in Amazon EC2.Keywords

This paper attempts to check whether the spot market volatility variation is an act of derivatives or merely industry specific factors only. This study is based on 23 stocks of six different industries of the Indian stock market. Among the 23 stocks, 10 stocks are derivatives stocks and the remaining 13 are non-derivative stocks of National Stock Exchange of India. Volatility in the selected stocks was modelled with GJR GARCH model for both pre-introduction and post introduction period of derivatives as it measures asymmetric effect also in addition to volatility changes. Changes in volatility, asymmetric effect, and volatility pattern of the selected stocks were examined separately. It was found that all the derivative stocks except HUL and CIPLA had a reduction in volatility after the introduction of derivatives. Most of the Non-Derivatives stocks had also experienced reduced volatility. Further, an industry wise analysis was done to find the effect of industry specific factors influencing volatility. Among the six select industries, five industries' stocks prove the effect of derivatives while one industry, Finance-Housing confirms the effect of industry specific factors.Keywords

Personal transport currently accounts for 25-30% of global CO2 emissions, increase in the pollution level, enormous demand for fuel and in turn a drastic increase in the external balances of the country. It also adds to the domestic inflationary pressures. The main objective of this study is to reduce the carbon emission in Tamil Nadu by increasing the utilization of the mass transit vehicles and by reducing the usage of personal vehicles. The numbers of mass transit vehicles, personal vehicles, per kilometer vehicle density, total length of the road were considered as the major factors for the study. A simulation was conducted to estimate the level of carbon emission and fuel consumption of both the personal as well as mass transit vehicles for a per kilometer usage in a district of Tamil Nadu in India. In the simulation process, different scenarios were assessed to determine the efficient and less carbon emitting commuting system and the results show that a meager 10% shift of commuters from personal vehicles to mass transit vehicles can result in huge carbon reduction. These simulations provide a supporting guideline to both the transport corporation and the pollution control board for creating a better commuting system and cleaner environment in Tamil Nadu.Keywords

Agrarian based Indian economy currently turned into a service based economy. Liberalization of Indian economy as well as present government's retail sector policy paves way for big organized retailers' to enter and also expand in the Indian retail market. Currently Indian retail market is dominated by unorganized, family owned kiranas, which hold almost 88% market share. Entry of new big organized players and expansion of existing big players will bring in conflict of interest with the currently dominating kiranas, who provide major employment. This paper discusses about adaptation of coopetition strategy by big organized retailers and kiranas, mainly to mitigate such conflict of interest. As per the strategy, organized big retailers will be the wholesaler for kiranas and kiranas will be the last mile distributor for the big player. Information Communication Technology (ICT) shall bridge the organized and unorganized retailers and play a major role in implementing coopetition strategy. A study was conducted among 272 Kiranas of southern districts of Tamil Nadu to check the feasibility of coopetition strategy. From the study, it is found that most of the Kiranas are ready to adapt "Coopetition strategy". This strategy will curtail the big organised retailers' investments in distribution network. At the same time kiranas will not lose their proximate customers business, even if the customer's order their requirements through E-retail system.Keywords

Tamil Nadu is one of the states in India that has an excellent transportation system. In the recent past, there is a wide gap in the development of Public and Personal commuting system. The daily usage ratio of these two modes is 0.2:99.8. This leads to an inefficient and ecologically degrading system of transportation. A study on the daily commuting pattern of people and their intention for a modal shift was done. Based on their intention, it is attempted to find a possible ecofriendly change in the road transportation for Tamil Nadu. The results are encouraging. The study is done with a survey on modal shift intention in select districts of Tamil Nadu and is evaluated with an adopted simulation for the carbon emission reduction along with economic and environmental benefits. The outcomes are significant for the entire country as it evidences a favourable economic and ecofriendly road commuting with a considerable reduction in the fuel consumption.Keywords

Carbon emission is the largest contributor to the phenomenon of global warming and petroleum products are the largest source of carbon emission into the environment. Carbon emission cannot be eliminated, but it certainly can be reduced to a greater extent by way of efficient utilization of petroleum products for the regular commute. This can be attained by creating changes in the current public commuting system and also by a policy change in public transport system. This study has been formulated to examine the pattern of commuting, attitude and behavioural intention of daily commuter towards public road transport system in Tamil Nadu. A survey was carried out in the districts under Trichy and Salem - Tamil Nadu State Transport Corporation (TNSTC) zone. A sample of 770 daily commuters were surveyed in selected corridors of Ariyalur, Nagapattinam, Perambalur, Pudukottai, Ramanathapuram, Sivagangai, Thanjavur, Thiruvarur, Tiruchirapalli, Salem, Dharmapuri, Krishnagiri, Karur and Namakkal in Tamil Nadu. The Theory of Planned Behaviour (TPB) model was used to examine the behavioural intention of the daily commuters and to identify factors that contribute and influence commuters to use public transport. Results show that the attitude toward public transport is the most dominant factor compared with other constraints. Majority of the personal mode commuters agreed for switchover to the public transport if there are some improvements in certain aspects like additional bus service, routes and enhanced services, which shows an encouraging response for environmental consciousness. The outcomes of this study are significant as the results are showing a favourable possibility of less carbon emitting commuting system for Tamil Nadu.Keywords

In the global environment of intense competition and continuous change, the state road transport undertakings need to focus on improving the level of their services and enhance the daily commuter’s satisfaction in order to achieve long-term survival. Evaluating the level of services provided by the existing public mass road transit service providers can help the policymakers to make better decisions for improving commuter satisfaction. The objective of the present research is to (a) measure the level of services provided by the state road transport corporations in Tamil Nadu and (b) evaluate the satisfaction of its daily commuters. An improved method that incorporates the daily commuters, who use both the public and private modes of transport in Tamil Nadu, is deployed for the evaluation. Moreover, the present study investigates the gap between commuters’ expectations and commuters’ perceptions with regard to the level of the services offered by the state road transport corporations in Tamil Nadu.
The empirical study was undertaken using SERVQUAL (tangibles, reliability, responsiveness, assurance and empathy) questionnaire in the seven zones of Tamil Nadu State Transport Corporations - TNSTC (32 Districts of Tamil Nadu). In total, 2788 questionnaires with valid responses were collected from the daily commuters using both personal and public mode transit. Results showed that there is a negative gap between the perception of the present service offered by the state transport corporations and the expectations of the daily commuters. Further, the proposed model suggested that the tangible dimensions of service quality have significant influence on the commuters’ satisfaction towards public mass road transit system in Tamil Nadu.
With these findings, it is concluded that the service dimensions of public transport policy of the Government need a slight change, which would strongly encourage the daily commuters to use public transport.

India was the 12th largest economy in the world in the year 2007 and today it’s the fifth largest. In such a growing economy, 90% of the businesses are Family owned Business and are accounting for 65% GDP contribution. Family Business is part of Indian culture and the sizes range from street vendor to Fortune 500 companies. This study has been conducted to understand the Family firms performance over Non-Family firms on various dimensions such as Market capitalization, Risk, Return, Profitability and Growth. NSE Index NIFTY constituent companies were taken for the study and analysis was done for the past 18 years. The results of these analysis predicated that the Non-Family firms are performing better in India in terms of market capitalization, Return, Profitability and Growth. However Family firms are dominating in the NSE NIFTY companies in terms of numbers. Even a few percentage improvements in its performance will significantly fuel Indian economy.Keywords

Beauty Soap segment holds the largest market share, account for more than 50% of the market. Keeping this in view this research is done to know the Women’s Current and Past Consumption Pattern of bathing Soap brands and to identify their Switch over Pattern of brands among women over ages. The age categories are classified as 11-20, 21-30, 31-40 and 41-50 years and above. In depth survey was carried out among 175 women in Sivakasi of Virudhunagar District in Tamil Nadu. Results show that predominantly women consumers prefer a soap brand which is suitablefor their skin typ. There seem an age wise switching pattern of brands and the switchover happens predominantly during 21 to 30 age spans. Mostly women get settled with a particular brand by the time they reach 40 years of age. The major switchover was from a popular Neem-Tulsi-Aloevera based Soap and a Beauty Bar from the same multinational brand house to a Sandal based south Indian brand. This shows the strong presence and brand loyalty for that south Indian brand in the market under study. It is also implicit that, the income level of the individual women and their family do not affect the choice of the Brand which they prefer. Curiosity to try a new product is the prime reason which induces women to switch over another brand. Rather than the promotions and other beauty aspects, women choose soap brand for their skin suitability. This draws attention to the brand houses marketing women soaps.Keywords
