Abstract

A case study was conducted on the patients with Thomas splint at Vinayaka Mission's Hospital, Salem with the objective of assessing the effectiveness of planned nursing care for the patients with Thomas splint. During admission all patients were having fracture, skin abrasion, and potential for pressure sore and one patient had profuse fracture bleeding and resulting hypovolemia, temperature irregularities. After using standardized tool for assessment and planned nursing care to the patients their recovery process was satisfactory. At the time of discharge or end of study the patient's major symptoms got relieved or alleviated and they and their relatives were satisfied with the care provided. Thus it can be concluded that the planned nursing care was effective for the patients with Thomas splint.

Abstract

An experimental one group pre test and post test design was carried out to assess the communication pattern and level of satisfaction among mechanically ventilated patients. Sixty numbers of mechanically ventilated and conscious patients were selected in a multispecialty Hospital by non probability purposive sampling technique. The technique used for data collection were interview Performa for demographic data and self structured rating scale to assess communication pattern and level of satisfaction. The result shows that, mean post test score of satisfaction level is 36.9, which is higher than mean pre test score of satisfaction level 31.4. The stander deviation of post test 2.51 is less than stander deviation of pre test 2.55 which indicates that the group is more homogenous in post test and marked improvement in satisfaction level in post test than pre test.

Mean post test score of communication pattern is 134.4, which is higher than mean pre test score of communication pattern 78.85. The stander deviation of post test 6.69 is less than stander deviation of pre test 7.2 which indicates that the group was more homogenous in post test and has a marked improvement in communication pattern in post test than pre test.

There is significant positive relationship between communication pattern and level of satisfaction of the patients with mechanical ventilator. The calculated r value is 0.25 (before using communication board) and 0.29 (after using communication board) indicate high significant relationship between communication pattern and level of satisfaction of the patients with mechanical ventilator. The investigator observed that all patients admitted on mechanical ventilator had poor communication pattern and thus frustrated.

Abstract

Aims and Objectives: To find out the effect of teaching by video assisted on awareness, pre procedural anxiety level and satisfaction of patients undergoing upper Gastro intestinal endoscopy.

Background: Anxiety is very much common in gastro intestinal endoscopy in majority of patients. Informing the patients about the procedure to become aware regarding the procedure and providing psychological support during procedure is one of the best method to reduce anxiety and increase satisfaction among patients undergoing upper gastro intestinal endoscopy.

Design: Quasi Experimental Design.

Methods: 60 patients undergoing upper gastro intestinal endoscopy were recruited for this study. The experimental group (n=30) watched a video assisted teaching programme on upper gastro intestinal endoscopy. The control group (n=30) received routine care.

Results: The experimental group reported increase in awareness and satisfaction scores were increased after upper endoscopy procedure. The pre procedural anxiety level was reduced in case of experimental group also.

Conclusion: The video assisted teaching programme on upper gastro intestinal endoscopy increased the awareness, reduced the pre procedural anxiety level and satisfaction of patients after completion of the procedure.

Abstract

A quasi experimental study with one group pretest and posttest without control group design was undertaken in Vinayaka Missions Hospital, Salem to assess the effectiveness of video assisted teaching module regarding central venous catheter related blood steam infections and its prevention on knowledge of staff nurses working in ICU. Data was collected from 50 staff nurses selected by purposive sampling technique using closed ended questionnaire from 20.09.10 to 02.10.10. Data was analyzed by using descriptive and inferential statistics. Demographic characteristic reveals that the highest percentage (82%) of the staff nurses were in the age group of 21-25 years, were females (78%) were having B.Sc. nursing degree (80%). Highest percentage were having less than one years of experience (52%), were working MICU (50%), SICU (24%), ICCU(26%) and CTICU(22%) and did not attend in-service program (82%). Overall pretest mean score was 19.5±4.71 (48%) whereas it was 29.62±3.21 (72%) in posttest revealing 24% enhancement of knowledge score. Area wise highest post test mean score was 81% which was obtained for the area of "The type of central venous associated infections" whereas the lowest post test mean score was 68% of the total score obtained for the area of "Precaution while taking care of patients with CVC". Effectiveness of VATM was highest for the staff nurses in the age group of above 35 years (51%) and with B.Sc nursing (78%), with 4-6 years of experience (78%), working in Medical Intensive care unit(72%) higher in female staff nurses (78%), and for those who had not attended in-service education program regarding central venous catheter related blood stream infections and its prevention (82%). Highly significant (P<0.01) difference was found between the area wise score values of pretest and posttest knowledge score and no significant (p>0.05) association was found between posttest knowledge scores in relation to age, gender, professional qualification, years of experience, departments of work and in-service education program attended.
