Abstract

The genus Morinda (Rubiaceae) including the species Morinda citrifolia is made up of around 80 species. Morinda citrifolia is commonly known as Indian Mulberry or Noni. The species name indicates the resemblance of the plant foliage to that of some citrus species. The fruit is yellowish white and fleshy, The corolla is white, There are five stamens, scarcely exerted, Leaves are opposite, pinnately veined, and glossy. Noni is naturalized on all of the main Hawaiian islands. It grows where it is relatively dry to moderately wet, from sea level to about 1500 feet elevation. It tolerates soil salinity and brackish irrigation water. Noni is propagated either from seed or stem cuttings. It mainly contains anthraquinones, Irridoids, polysaccharides, glycosides, flavonoids, lignins, coumarins, phytosterols and volatile constituents. M. citrifolia is one of the most important traditional Polynesian medicinal plants and has been heavily promoted for a wide range of uses; from arthritis and burns to circulatory weakness, diabetes, cancer, skin inflammation, and wounds.

Abstract

Plants are one of the most important sources of medicines. Curry leaf (Murraya koenigii) is an important leafy vegetable. Its leaves are widely used in Indian cookery for flavouring foodstuffs. Curry leaf is Native to India. Large shrub to small tree. Pinnate leaves are used in many South Indian curries. The major constituents identified were the volatile oil of the fresh leaves of Murraya koenigii. Its nutritional value benefits both the young and the old alike. Women who suffer from calcium deficiency, osteoporosis etc can find an ideal natural calcium supplement in curry leaves. They are also used externally to cure eruptions and the bites of poisonous animals. Curry leaves can be used with effective result to treat burn, bruises and skin eruption. Kidney pain can be cured by using juice of ischolar_main of Murrayakoenigii. It can be used in preventing premature greying of hair. A volatile oil, curry leaf oil, produced from the plant has uses in the soap industry.

Abstract

Acorus calamus Linn. also known as Vacha is one of the oldest herbs with creeping rhizome in Indian traditional system and has been used as laxative, diuretic, antioxidant, antimicrobial. The present study was carried out to investigate morphological, microscopical, physicochemical and phytochemical screening of Acorus calamus rhizome and powder. Morphological studies showed the presence of various diagnostic characters. In the microscopical studies, t.s. showed the presence of epidermis, cortex, fibrovascular bundle, endodermis contain parenchymatous cells and vascular bundle and powder of drug shows vessels with starch grain. Ash value, extractive value, foreign organic matter,moisture content and TLC were determined for quality standard of drugs. Phytochemical investigation shows the presence of alkaloids, carbohydrate, glycoside, phenolic compounds and tannins. The result of the study could be useful for identification and preparation of monograph of the plant.
