Abstract

The research explored the effectiveness of Religious Cognitive Emotional Therapy (RCET) Program to alleviate psycho-spiritual crisis termed as; depressive symptoms and lack of religious meaning of consecrated women in India. The Psycho-Spiritual crises are experiences a person encounters in life that are distressing due to irrational beliefs, thoughts and emotions about consecrated life. These crises can affect their relationship with God, Religious vows, prayer, community life and ministry can lead to depression. This study was conducted in two phases: 1. development of the RCET program, 2. assessment of the effectiveness of RCETP in alleviating depressive symptoms and enhancing religious meaning of consecrated women employing true experimental research design particularly between subjects. Beck Depression Inventory (BDI-II), Assessment of Religious Meaning was admmistered before and after the implementation of the program. Total number of 60 consecrated women randomly assigned to control and experimental conditions. Data analysis was done utilizing mean scores, paired sample t-test, MANOVA and Cohen's d. The null hypothesis was tested at 0.05 level of significant. The statistical analysis between pre, post and extended post test scores of the experimental group showed significant difference (P=0.00) revealed the significant effectiveness of RCET program in decreasing depressive symptoms and enhancing religious meaning.

Abstract

Suicide is a public health problem and the second leading cause of death among adolescents and youth. There are 800,000 people dying every year. Most of the young who commit suicide have a history of psychological problems of mood disorder, substance abuse or dependence. Personal and interpersonal problems lead to depression and suicide ideation among young adults. The purpose of this study was to develop and implement an adjunct therapeutic intervention for young adults having depression and suicide ideation. The researcher developed a Psycho-Spiritual Meaning Intervention (PSMI) integrating theories of cognitive, mindfulness and meaning management and coined a name as “LeHo-FiHo”, an acronym for leaving home to find home an inward journey of transformation and renewal. Psychospiritual intervention is aimed to reduce depression and suicide ideation of young adults who are under pharmacotherapy. This study used mixed research method especially sequential exploratory design. This study was conducted in two phases: the first phase was the development of the intervention and the second phase was the experimental validation of the intervention. This intervention was subjected to expert validation. The result of the study shows a significant decrease in depression and suicide ideation among the young adults. The statistical analysis was done by using mean scores, MANOVA, paired sample test and Cohen's d. The pretest and post-test scores of the experimental group indicated significant differences (p=.001) at 0.05 level in the paired sample test and Cohens'd test confirmed large effect of the intervention program. The result reveled that PSMI was effective in reducing depression and suicide ideation of young adults.

Many contributing factors for depression and suicide among young adults are personal problems, relationship issues, the stress in the workplace and academic fields, family concerns, inability to find meaning and purpose of life and the daily stress and hassles of life. The purpose of this study was to develop an adjunct therapeutic intervention for young adults having depression and suicide ideation and to pilot test its feasibility. The researcher developed a psycho-spiritual meaning intervention integrating theories of cognitive, mindfulness and meaning management and coined a name as “LeHo-FiHo”, an acronym for leaving home to find home an inward journey of transformation and renewal. The intervention was subjected to expert validation and pilot testing with ten young adults with moderate to severe depression and suicide ideation. the result of the study shows a significant decrease in depression and suicide ideation among the young adults
