Work Related Burnout among Software Professionals in India: A Questionnaire Study Using Maslach’s Burnout Inventory

Aim: The present study is designed to assess the work related burnout using Maslach Burnout Inventoryamong software professionals working in Chennai city.

Methodology: A cross-sectional study was conducted to evaluate the work related burnout among 900 software developers belonging to different companies in Chennai city. Burnout self test developed by Maslach was used to assess the burnout. Data collected was subjected to statistical analysis using Chi square test.

Result: Among the sample, 61.2% were males and 38.8% were females. More femalessuffered moderate burnout compared to male. Comparison between job designation and burnout showed that there is no statistically significant difference in the burnout experienced. Comparison between gender and burnout showed that, more females suffer moderate burnout compared to males and the difference is statistically significant.

Conclusion: More female software professionals are experiencing moderate level of burnout compared to their male counterparts.
