The objectives of the study are to assess communication barriers, assess staff nurses' attitude towards the importance of communication, to find out relationship between communication barriers and attitude of staff nurses, association between communication barriers perceived and selected demographic variables, association between attitude regarding importance of communication and selected demographic variables. The descriptive survey approach was used. Study was conducted among 100 staff nurses of various departments of Kasturba Hospital, Manipal. Convenient sampling technique was used to select samples .3 tools were used for data collection and they are demographic Performa, tool to assess the communication barriers, and attitude about the importance of communication among staff nurses in caring patients from culturally and linguistically diverse background. Content validity and reliability of tools were established.
This study findings showed that majority of samples (71%) belonged to the age group of 20-30, (88%) are females,(58%) were diploma holders and about (49%) work in general wards. Majority with (71%) were from Karnataka and most of the samples (48%) included in the study have years of experience between 1-5 years. The verbal and nonverbal communication barriers were assessed and found that 79% of nurses experience moderate level of difficulty in communicating with patients.. Most of them (93%) had a favorable attitude towards the importance of communication. There was no significant association between communication barriers and selected demographic variables, but found a significant association between gender and communication barriers(x2=15.203,p<0.01).There is no significant association between attitude about importance of communication and selected demographic variables, no relationship between communication barriers and attitude about importance of communication(r= -0.037, p=0.715).
It was concluded that nurses experiences both verbal and non verbal communication difficulties in caring patients from culturally and linguistically diverse background and they have a favorable attitude towards the importance of communication for the same.

A class of undergraduate nursing students of size 80 was randomized to control and experimental group for teaching pharmacology (respiratory drugs) using Active Lecture Cum Live Demonstration (ALLD) and Active Lecture Cum Video (ALV). The controls were taught with ALLD and the experimental groups of students were taught using ALV. It was observed that the mean post-test knowledge score (50.05) of the experimental group after the competency programme on drug administration using active lecture cum video were apparently higher than the control group (45). Hence the competency programme on drug administration using Active Lecture cum Video (ALV) proved to be more effective than Active Lecture cum Live Demonstration (ALLD).Keywords

Introduction
Adolescence is a crucial period of growth and development in girls and boys. During this period the risk of iron deficiency and anemia appears. In India iron deficiency anemia is a major public health problem affecting people from all walks of life (Dallman, Simes&Stekel, 1980).
Objective
to explore the factors influencing anemia among anemic adolescent girls.
Design
a qualitative analysis using grounded theory was carried out for the present study.
Setting
homes of the selected adolescent girls.
Instruments a questionnaire on background information, record of investigations, nutritional assessment and a semi structured questionnaire for interviewing.
Participants ten adolescent girls purposively selected; participated in the present study
Results
the age of the adolescent girls ranged from 12 to 15 years. They were studying in 8th, 9th or 10th standard. Calorie, iron&protein consumption was less compared to their requirement. Hemoglobin ranged from 7.2 to 8.2 gm/ dl.
Conclusion
adolescents perceived anemia as a major problem. Menstruation, worm infestation and dietary deficiency were found as the major cause; which was consistent with the literature. Therefore the study helps to conclude that health awareness programme for the adolescent girls and their society is essential in preventing anemia.

A profession will be in a better position to pursue its goals when its actions are guided by an accurate understanding of its public image. India has a well planned public health care delivery system on one side as well as a huge burden of the global case load on the other. No doubt, nurses are the essential and indispensible members of the health team in the public health care delivery system. Being on the verge of the decade (2001-2010), it is essential that we evaluate where we are in terms of quantity and quality of national health care requirements and the professional education system with regard to nursing per se.Keywords
