Abstract

Quality of Life (QOL) measures are useful methods to understand the impact of illness and outcome of treatment. The aim of any therapeutic intervention is not just symptom alleviation but overall improvement. The number of studies on the Quality of Life in bipolar affective disorder, especially in adolescent, is very less considering the prevalence rate of this disorder. Material and In the present study effort has been made to understand the QOL among adolescent patients with Bipolar Affective Disorder (BPAD) (N=30), skin diseases (N=30) and normal controls (N=30). They were rated on WHOQOL BREF. Results of statistical analysis indicates that patients with BPAD have been found to have poorer QOL than adolescent with skin diseases and normal controls. Understanding the quality of life of psychiatric illness like BPAD vis a vis other medical disorders like skin disease (which is usually a chronic disease and QOL is reported to be poor in it also) throws new light in terms of the impact of illness, course, out come and intervention strategies.

Abstract

This paper attempts to determine whether gender differences affects intelligence and academic performance among school going children. Total 100 children of both sexes between the age ranges of 7-15 years were selected. Intelligence assess by Malin's intelligence scale for Indian children and for academic performance academic records of children was taken from the school. Data was analysed using of descriptive statistics, chi square test and person correlation. Results showed that there is no influence of intelligence and academic performance on gender.

Abstract

Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) is a common, heritable and disabling neuropsychiatric disorder.Evidence from cognitive and neuro imaging studies (functional and structural magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and positron emission tomography (PET)) have generally been taken to be supportive of these theoretical models; however, results from these studies have not been entirely congruent with each other. Attempts have been made to delineate genetic contributions in OCD with an ongoing search for neurocognitive end opheno types but have met with limited success. In this study, we attempted to study andcompare the attentional property of patient swith OCD, their first-degree relatives (FDRs) and healthy controls. A cross-sectional design study was carried out with eight patients (age 11-16 yrs.), their eight siblings andeight age matched healthy controls who were screen edusing GHQ-12. As part of this assessment, we administered Stroop Colour Word Test on affected children and adolescents with OCD, their non-affected siblings and normal control. SPSS version 20.0 was used for data analysis. The patients with OCD performed worse than their FDRs as well as from the normal control group on test assessing attention, (P > 0.01). Studyrevealed deficits in attention, and supported the involvement of responsibility of fronto-striatal loop in OCD. The present study reveals attention in OCD is impaired.
