Abstract

Several studies have emphasized on the role rehabilitation, but there are very few studies that have focused on a comprehensive rehabilitation as compared to vocational training. This study described the effect of a comprehensive intervention of cognitive retraining and vocational training when compared to the vocational training alone in the patients of chronic schizophrenia. A group of 12 patients diagnosed as schizophrenia as per ICD 10 for a minimum of 5 years (chronic cases) between the age range of 30 and 45 years were taken who were on the maintenance dozes of antipsychotic medication, staying in the hospital (Central Institute of Psychiatry, Ranchi) for 6 months, having significant cognitive deficits and compliant to intervention. Six of them were assigned to comprehensive training group, and six were for the vocational training group. The results indicated that though there were no significant differences between the comprehensive group and the vocational group, but there had been significant improvement within the each group from baseline through final assessment. The vocational training was as effective as comprehensive training program. However, the comprehensive group was somewhat better than the vocational group.

Abstract

Patients with schizophrenia perform poorly on various cognitive functions tasks. Of late, there is surge in interest in determining the endophenotypic value of cognitive functions in schizophrenia. The present study was conducted aiming to understand the status and endophenotypic value of working memory and verbal memory in schizophrenia. Fifteen schizophrenia patients, their healthy siblings (N=15) and healthy controls (N=15) participated in the study. Patients performed significantly poorer than the healthy controls. Siblings of patients with schizophrenia also performed poorly than the healthy controls. Findings have been discussed in the light of endophenotypic value of verbal memory and working memory in schizophrenia.

Abstract

This paper attempts to determine whether sociodemographic variables like residence, socioeconomic status, education, occupation and so on, have an impact on measures of executive functioning in the first degree relatives of those with Bipolar Disorder. 30 unaffected first degree relatives of patients with Bipolar Disorder of both sexes, between the ages of 14 and 50 years were selected. Executive functioning was assessed using the BADS battery which consisted of the Rule Shift Cards (RS), Action Programme (AP), Key Search (KS), Temporal Judgement (TJ), Zoo Map (ZM), Modified Six Elements (MSET); and the Dysexecutive Questionnaire (DEX). Data was analysed using descriptive statistics, Point Biserial and Pearson correlation. Results showed that age, education and residence did have an impact on certain subtests of this battery. While Age was positively related to TJTotal profile scores, Education was positively correlated with MSET Total profile scores and Residence was directly related to Total profile scores of Key Search subtest.
