Abstract

Human suicidal behaviour has always been a source of dread and wonder to mankind. Suicide among youths' has emerged as a significant global public health problem and it is third leading cause of death. The present study is designed to examine the relationship of depression and social support with suicide ideation. Sample for the study consisted of 150 participants drawn from different colleges of Kurukshetra (Haryana). The participants were assessed with Scale for Suicide Ideation, Beck Depression Inventory and Social Support Questionnaire. The objectives of the study were (a) to examine the relationship of suicide ideation with depression and social support, and (b) to find out the predictors of suicide ideation. Results demonstrated that suicide ideation was positively associated with depression and negatively associated with social support. Multiple regression analysis found that social support satisfaction, a measure of social support and depression are the potent predictors for suicidal ideation.

Abstract

Many people find it hard to cope with the pressures of modern living. Every day, a quarter of a million people miss work because of stress, with 75 percent of all illnesses thought to be stress-related. And when times are hard, it can be difficult to see the light at the end of the tunnel. Cultivating mindfulness is the key to overcome suffering and recognize natural wisdom: both our own and others'. This research paper focuses on Developing Psychological Capital (Hope, Self-efficacy, Resilience and Optimism) through Mindfulness Therapy. A sample of 186 adults (77 M, 109 F) aged 21 to 65 years was randomly selected for research. Of whom 136 adults (52 M, 84 F) completed six measures: The Hope Scale, The General Self-efficacy scale, 14-item Resilience Scale (RS-14), The Life Orientation Test-Revised (LOT-R), Beck Depression Inventory (BDI) and Beck Anxiety Inventory (BAI) for screening the participants with high depression and anxiety. The screened 64 (32 M, 32 F) participants were randomly assigned to two groups: experimental group (32adults: 16 M, 16 F) and control group (32 adults: 16 M, 16 F). Participants in experimental group received Mindfulness Therapy for 8 weeks. The results obtained by applying paired samples t-test indicated a significant improvement in all the four constructs of Psychological Capital (Hope, Self-efficacy, Resilience and Optimism) and reduction in Depression and Anxiety.

Abstract

The study examined relationship of personal and family environment correlates with suicide ideation among youth. Sample for the study consisted of 225 subjects drawn from Kurukshetra (Haryana). The objectives of the study were (a) to explore the association of suicide ideation with aggression, hopelessness, impulsiveness and family environment, and (b) to find out linear combination of different predictors of suicide ideation. The participants were assessed with Scale for Suicide Ideation, Aggression Questionnaire, Hopelessness Scale, Impulsiveness scale and Family Environment Scale. The data were analyzed by using Pearson Product Moment method of correlation and stepwise multiple regression analysis. Results demonstrated that suicide ideation was positively associated with aggression, hopelessness, and conflict measure of family environment and negatively associated with some measures of family environment. Stepwise Multiple regression analysis found linear combination of two main predictors i.e. cohesion of family environment and physical aggression of aggression for suicide ideation.
