Abstract

The present study is an attempt to assess the mental health and well-being of alcoholics (100 alcoholics, 50 males and 50 females) of age between 20-50 years. Tools used for the collection of data included P.G.I Health questionnaire (N-1) and P.G.I General Well-being measure. The scores of the individuals were treated statistically, tabulated and interpreted. The results revealed that there is significant difference between male and females alcoholics with regard to their mental health and Well-being. The male alcoholics are in a high state of mental health and Well-being in comparison to female alcoholics.

Abstract

Cardiovascular diseases caused 2.3 million deaths in 1990; this is projected to double by the year of 2020. The present attempt is a comparative study of hypertension and Coronary Artery Disease (CAD) patients on stress-related symptoms. Data consisted of 200 patients, of these there were 100 hypertensive and 100 CAD patients. Patients were drawn from OPD of the Jawaharlal Nehru Medical College and Hospital (JNMCH), AMU, Aligarh. Stress symptoms checklist was used to measure different types of stress namely, mental physical, emotional and social. Independent t-test was used to examine the differences between hypertensive and CAD patients on stress-related symptoms. Result indicates that, there were no significant differences between the mean scores of hypertensive and CAD disease patients on mental, physical and emotional symptoms of stress whereas significant difference was found between comparative groups on social symptoms of stress. Both the groups of patients were not differing significantly on overall stress symptoms. It was concluded that stress plays a significant role in susceptibility, progress and outcomes of cardiovascular diseases (i.e., hypertension and CAD).

Abstract

The present research paper was undertaken to examine the level of academic stress and overall achievement motivation among science and social science adolescents and their interrelationship. For that purpose, 100 adolescents of class XII were selected randomly from Senior Secondary School (boys) Aligarh Muslim University, Aligarh. Among them 50 adolescents were from science stream and 50 were from social science stream. Student Stress Scale and Achievement Motivation Scale were used for measuring academic stress and achievement motivation of adolescents respectively. Results indicated that stressful worries and overall academic stress were significantly higher among science adolescents than in social science adolescents. Stressful worries were the significant predictors of achievement motivation among science adolescents whereas poor administration and inadequate academic environment in college were significant predictor of achievement motivation among social science adolescents.

Abstract

The present paper examines the level of aggression between professional and nonprofessional courses students. The sample was comprised all students of different departments of Aligarh Muslim University, Aligarh. The sample consisting of 50 (25 males and 25 females) professional courses (BUMS, MBA & Engg.) students and 50 (25 males and 25 females) non-professional courses (Arts, Social sciences and theology) students.  The Aggression Questionnaire (Buss & Perry, 1992) has been used, and t- test has been applied. Analysis shows that professional and non-professional courses students were significantly differ on total scores of aggression  as well as on Physical and Verbal factors of aggression non-professional students were also found to be more aggressive than professional students whereas on Anger and  Hostility both professional and non-professional were more or less similar. Further, no significant gender difference were found on total aggression as well as males and females subjects were not differ on different subscales of aggression.

Abstract

Caregiver is an individual who has the responsibility of meeting the physical and psychological needs of the dependent patient. The term "caregiver distress" is used to describe the physical, emotional and financial stress of providing care. As the disease progresses, it carries with it a tremendous increase of burden on the caregiver who does the caregiving. Caregivers of hospitalized individuals suffering from chronic medical illness are at risk of being subjected to mental health consequences such as depression, anxiety and burnout. This study provides an important contribution to a growing field of research that tries to investigate the distress, stressors, appraisals, and other factors that impact caregiver well-being. This study aimed to compare the level of distress among male and female caregivers. The study included two groups of caregivers, each of 50 members. Group 1 consisted of male caregivers of hospitalized patients and group 2 consisted of female caregivers of hospitalized patients. The sample was randomly selected from Jawahar Lal Nehru Medical College and Hospital (Aligarh, India). Caregiver Distress Scale was used to assess the distress and psychological well-being of caregivers. Several theories have suggested that gender differences in caregivers' outcomes exist because compared with male caregivers, male caregivers face higher levels of care giving stressors, have fewer social resources, and report lower levels of psychological and physical health. In the present study the caregiver distress in the male caregivers was significantly higher than that of females. In conclusion, male caregivers of hospitalized patients experienced higher burden than female caregivers irrespective of disease severity.
