Abstract

Old age is a period when people move away from previous more desirable period or time of usefulness. In this study 73 samples were collected 35 from urban and 38 from rural and attempted to find out the comparison regarding the quality of life and sexual function of urban and rural old age population to help them in improving the quality of life and adjust well in sexual function in the best possible way. The study was conducted at Post Graduate Institute of Behavioural and Medical Sciences (PGIBAMS ) using specially designed socio-demographic and personal data sheets. The information was gathered from old age population using WHOQOL-BREF and International index of erectile function Questionnaire (IIEFQ) to know the quality of life and erectile function respectively. The result found no significant difference regarding quality of life (Qol) between urban and rural old age population but better result showed in urban old age population regarding sexual desire than rural old age population.

Abstract

The aim of the present study is to see depression, suicidal ideation effect on quality of life in HIV/AIDS patients and normal population. Human Immunodeficiency Virus/ Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome (HIV/AIDS) is a global health problem which has brought new dimensions to some of the already complex issues threatening India. We all know the impact HIV/AIDS has had on the World, but what people don't realize is the impact it is having on other serious health issues in the country. Depression is the most prevalent psychiatric co morbidity and a common cause of significant morbidity among people with HIV infection. Suicidality may be the direct physiological result of HIV, a reaction to chronic pain, an emotional reaction to having a chronic and life-threatening illness. Quality of life is a phrase used to refer to an individual's total wellbeing. The sample size of the study is 30 HIV/AIDS patients and 30 normal populations. The tools used for assessing the variables are beck depression inventory (BDI), WHO quality of life (WHOOL-BRIEF), suicidal ideation scale (SIS).

Abstract

The current research investigated differences in self-concept and adjustment of orphan children and children living in their homes. The sample consisted of 60 children (30 children from orphanages and 30 living in their homes). Purposive sampling technique was used. Children living with both parents were drawn from different private schools and orphan children were drawn from orphanages of SOS village, Mana Camp, Raipur (C.G.). Self concept questionnaire developed by Saraswat (1984) and Bell adjustment inventory developed by Mohsin&Shamsad (1987) were used. The children in orphanages reported lower degree of self-concept and adjustment than children living with their parents. The findings further suggest no significant gender difference in self concept and adjustment of the orphan children and the children living with both parents. The findings of this research will promote our understanding of the personality and self concept and adjustment of children in orphanages and intact homes.

Abstract

Objectives : To find out the prevalence of ADHD in school going children and to study the effect of gender&socio demographic variables on ADHD children. Attention Deficit Hyperactive Disorder (ADHD) is disorder of childhood and adolescence characterized by a pattern of extreme pervasive, persistent and debilitating inattention, over activity and impulsivity (APA, 1994). ADHD is one of the most prevalent chronic health disorders affecting school age children. It is also the most frequently occurring problem in neuro-psychiatric disorders of children (Szymanski&Zolotor, 2001). Attention Deficit Disorder with Hyperactivity (ADHD) has been recognized as one of the major public health problem in a number of Western countries as well as in developing countries. The prevalence of this syndrome is difficult to specify since it varies greatly with the diagnostic criteria employed, the population of children studied and method of investigation. Also the prevalence of ADHD in school going children is increasing day by day and it has become a burning problem for the teachers and parents. Thus, the present study will be helpful in identifying students with ADHD and for their better management. Methodology: The sample of the study consisted of 370 student studying in various schools (Saskiya Prathmic Shala, chowbe colony, Saskiya Prathmic Shala, Genious Public School&Sharda Public School Mana basti) of Raipur (C.G.). The sample covered students studying in I, II,&III standards of age range 6 to 11 years. All students fulfilling their inclusion and exclusion criteria were selected. Result will be discussed in paper.

Abstract

Coping refers to the way in which people deal with threats and with then emotional consequences. Coping is a dynamic process, which shifts in nature depending on situational constraints and is also affected by how the individual appraises the situation. This study was planned to see what are the coping strategies used by alcohol and cannabis abusers and whether there is a difference between the two with respect to Non drug abusers. The sample comprised of 44 patients (which include 22 alcohol users & 22 cannabis users) and 22 normal controls fulfilling the inclusion and exclusion criteria were recruited from Post Graduate Institute of Behaviour And Medical Sciences, Raipur. shows that the two drug abusing groups used significantly more dysfunctional coping styles. It is in accordance with the common expectation that as compared to non drug abusers, alcohol and cannabis dependents should use more dysfunctional coping styles.

Abstract

To see the attention and concentration, intellectual functioning and visuo-spatial functioning of the patient with epilepsy as compared to normal epileptic group. Epilepsy is one of the most commonly encountered organic illnesses in psychiatric set-up. It is the second most common chronic neurological condition seen by neurologists. It is estimated that there are 55,00,000 persons with epilepsy in India (Shridharan, 2002). Epilepsy is a name of the brain disorder characterized by predominantly by recurrent and unpredictable interruptions of normal brain function called epileptic seizures. The effects of epilepsy are felt in multiple aspects of the person's life, including physical and mental health, cognitive function, educational achievements, vocational prospects, and family and peer relations (Jalava, 1997). Cognition, which includes processes such as intelligent thinking, perceiving, remembering, reasoning, judging, expressing, and understanding, has an important role in the inception, evolution, and manifestation of many of these other aspects of function recognized to be compromised in people with epilepsy. To examine these cognitive disturbances and other seventy, psychological tests can be regarded as an important instrument.

Abstract

Speech disorder is increasingly understood to be a significant indicator and characteristic of schizophrenia. Abnormalities in receptive language processes are also reliably detected for patients with schizophrenia including disturbances to word perception, sentence comprehension, and semantic and syntactic processing. Thus the objective of the study was to assess receptive speech among male and female patients suffering from schizophrenia using Receptive Speech Function Scale of AIIMS comprehensive neuropsychological battery in Hindi (Adult form). Thirty patients, i.e., fifteen male and fifteen female patients already diagnosed as having paranoid schizophrenia (as per ICD-10 DCR) were selected from outpatient and inpatient department of PGIBAMS, Raipur, through purposive sampling. The result of the study concluded that there were only significant differences found between male and female subjects on certain aspects of receptive speech like understanding of commands that involves exhibiting motor responses and to identify non-sensible words.

Abstract

The present study focuses upon studying the memory impairment in patients with schizophrenia and alcohol induced psychosis. Memory emerges as one of the principal foci of interest in studies of cognitive impairments in schizophrenia and alcohol induced psychosis. To assess and compare memory impairment in patients with schizophrenia and alcohol induced psychosis. A sample of 60 patients, 30 patients diagnosed as having schizophrenia and 30 patients diagnosed as having alcohol induced psychosis as per the ICD-10 DCR criteria, within the age range of 18-65 years, males, using the purposive sampling technique will be taken from the outpatient department of PGIBAMS, Raipur for the study. Brief Psychiatric Rating Scale will be used for assessing the presence and severity of psychopathology in both the groups, CAGE will be used for assessing the level of alcohol use in patients with alcohol induced psychosis and PGI Memory scale will be used for assessing the presence of memory impairment in both the groups. Appropriate statistical analysis will be done using SPSS-16 and results will be discussed at the time of presentation.
