Abstract

Research into stress among health care professionals has tended to neglect staff employed in psychiatric settings. This study compares nurses working in psychiatry department with nurses working in other departments on variables, namely, perceived stress and subjective quality of life. To compare the socio-demographic variables, level of perceived stress and subjective quality of life among nurses working at psychiatry department and those working at other departments of the hospital. This was a cross-sectional comparative study carried out on a sample of 60 nurses; 30 of whom working at Psychiatric centres of Jodhpur and Jaipur and rest 30 nurses working at other departments of M.D.M. Hospital, Jodhpur. Three questionnaires were applied: a semi-structured socio-demographic proforma, perceived stress scale and subjective well being inventory. In our study, no significant difference was found between the two groups of nurses for perceived stress and well being. Pearson's correlational analysis suggested strong negative correlation between perceived stress scale scores and subjective well being scores. The study found that there was no significant difference between nurses from psychiatry ward and those from other departmental wards of the hospital for the variables perceived stress and subjective well being. Multiple intervening variables may be responsible for above finding. However, it is concluded that higher levels of stress may adversely affect nurses' subjective well being.

Abstract

The cancer experience inspires fresh or renewed interest in religion. Religiosity and religious coping have been found to be significantly associated with better quality of life and improved adjustment to cancer. The present study attempts to assess the religious coping and quality of life of patients suffering from cancer. Objective of the study was to study socio-demographic profile of cancer patients and to assess their religious coping and its association with their quality of life. The present study was conducted on 98 cancer patients, admitted in wards of Radiotherapy and Medicine Departments in M.D.M. Hospital, Jodhpur. Three questionnaires were applied: a semi-structured socio-demographic proforma, brief RCOPE scale and subjective well being inventory. Results suggest that female patients had higher scores on positive religious coping scale. Patients with different cancer types showed little variation in religious coping scale. A strong correlation was found between positive religious coping scores and subjective well-being inventory scores. Present study concluded that greater use of positive religious coping was related to better overall quality of life, while greater use of negative religious coping was associated with worse overall quality of life.

Abstract

The aims of this study were to determine prevalence of erectile dysfunction in diabetes mellitus (type 2) patients and its impact on their quality of life with different domains of well being. Randomly selected 150 patients with diabetes mellitus (type 2) out of them only 100 patients have given consent to become part of the study on the ground of anonymity. These patients are attending diabetes clinic of the medicine department of M.D.M. Hospital attached to Dr. S.N. Medical College, Jodhpur from 1st September to 30th November, 2012. These patients were included in the study as per inclusion and exclusion criteria. For study of interested object scales, International Index for Erectile function [IIEF]&WHOQOL-BREF [HINDI VERSION] were used and diagnosis after screening confirmed with complete psychological workup including mental status examination. The presenting diagnosis is based on standard criteria given by ICD-10 and the diagnosis also approximated with DSM-IV-TR. The data were analyzed with appropriate statistical tests. In our study population 21(21%) of patient experience some degree of erectile dysfunction. Results were displaying from mild to severe grade of dysfunction. This is also established that those who were suffering from erectile dysfunction found more impairment in quality of life in comparison to those without erectile dysfunction. In our study we concluded that patients with diabetes have higher significant of erectile dysfunction, at the same time study population were experienced poorer quality of life and found difficulty in daily functioning. This is also noteworthy in our study that patient of diabetes mellitus are itself have impaired functioning because of chronicity of illness, long running treatment and eventually unavoidable complication.

Abstract

The current study aims to find out the outcome of biofeedback therapy in subjects suffering from somatoform disorders associated with co-morbid depression. The study was conducted at psychiatric center, Jodhpur. Subjects were grouped into experimental and control groups, and those labeled experimental group were given suitable antidepressant and biofeedback therapy (six sessions), spread over 6 weeks, while subjects comprising control group were kept on pharmacotherapy alone. Hamilton depression rating scale (HDRS) and patient health questionnaire (PHQ-15) were used. In the present study, 90 patients were recruited out of which 78 patients completed the study. After 6 weeks of therapy, among the experimental group, the number of patients with no depression increased, and the mean score on HDRS also decreased. The mean score on PHQ also decreased showing improvement in somatoform symptoms. The t-value is significant in the experimental group, not in the control group. The present study favors biofeedback as an additional therapy, especially for relaxation and coping with the illness. This study, however, was over a short period of time, and further longitudinal studies incorporating other behavior therapy modalities are required.
