Abstract

In the present study, the level of depression was examined in a sample of 120 adolescents (60 boys and 60 girls) with equal participation from different domicile types (60 from rural and 60 from urban areas) and different family types (74 from joint and 46 from nuclear families). The measure used for collecting data was Beck Depression Inventory. The results of the study revealed a significant difference in the level of depression between the boys and girls. Girls were found to be more depressive than boys. Also a significant difference was found between rural and urban adolescents, and joint and nuclear family adolescents with rural and nuclear family adolescents were found to be more depressive than their counterparts.

Abstract

The present study is an attempt to examine the role of home environment in developing an adolescents' locus of control. The data were collected by mutiphasic sampling method. In the first phase 600 adolescents (300 boys and 300 girls) in the age range of 14-18 years belonging to nuclear families were selected and administered the self developed home environment scale. After that the respondents were categorized into two groups i.e. the participants with favourable and unfavourable home environment on the basis of their mean and standard deviation on the said scale which were the final research subjects for the study. In the last phase the final sample of 281 subjects (152 favourable home environment and 129 unfavourable home environment) were administered R. Pal's Locus of Control Scale. The data were analyzed in the SPSS Program. The results of the study revealed that there is a significant role of home environment in developing an adolescent's locus of control.
