Predictors of Adult Crying and its Positive and Negative Outcomes

The present study was conducted to find out whether the factors such as Duration of crying episode, Intensity of crying, Time gap, People present during crying episode, significantly contribute to crying. 60 adults (male=30 and female=30) were taken as a sample for study. Adult Crying Inventory developed by Ad Vingerhoets (1995) was used for this study. Step wise multiple regression analysis was done to find out the results. For negative crying factors Crying Episode Lasted for 5-15 minutes and Intensity of Crying with Wet eyes sobbing and howling significantly contributed for negative crying. Factors such as Intensity of Crying With wet Eyes Sobbing Howling, Body movements and Vocalization Effect of Crying (Made My Peace with the Situation), Intensity of Crying With wet Eyes Sobbing and Howling were contributed on positive outcomes in positive events of adults. The study concludes that the crying in both positive and negative events have led to the mood change which is the positive outcome. Further discussion was made.
