- A Study of Blossom Biology in Solanum khasisnum Clarke

A study of blossom biology was carried out in two selections, i.e., JRL-28 and JRL-12, of S. khasianum. The development of flowers after the emergence of buds required 20 and 25 days, and blooming period were 120 and 150 days in case of JRL-28 and JRL-12, respectively. The duration of flowering was recorded to be 100 days. The anthesis occurred between 5.00 A.M. And 8.30 A.M., and the flowers fully opened between 7.30 A. M. and 9.45 A. M. The pollen grains were 25.2 - 29.4 μ and 25.2 - 33.6 μ in size, having 95.67% - 97.21% and 91.16% - 96.16% viability in JRL-28 and JRL-12, respectively. The incidence of paediatric head injury is growing larger day by day due to various reasons in this era of mechanisation. We tried to evaluate the various aspects of head injury in children like incidence, severity, its clinical and radiological correlation, fatality and outcome etc. in our Institute IPGME&R, Kolkata. One third of total head injured patients were in paediatric age group in our study and it was evident that early evaluation of the injured child with CT scan and referral to neurosurgical centre can save many lives.Keywords

The most common incomplete cervical spinal injury is central cord syndrome. As defined by Schneider et al in 1954, there is disproportionately greater motor deficit in the upper limbs than in the lower limbs. In this prospective study, 26 in-patients with cervical spine injury with greater motor loss in the upper limbs following the injury were selected. Based on clinical status and radiological findings, 19 were operated upon. Results at 6 weeks and 6 month follow up are discussed. Fourteen patients admitted with intramedullary spinal cord tumours and operated at Medical College, Kolkata, during a five year period from January 2008. Five tumours were radically resected, 9 partially excised. Radiation therapy was advised post-operatively to all patients. There was no post-operative mortality. Three patients developed wound infection. Postoperative clinical assessment between four to eight weeks after surgery showed that 4 out of 14 patients improved, 6 remained unchanged, while 4 had worsening of deficits. Immediate post-operative assessment, however, was less encouraging. The follow up period ranged from 2 weeks to 36 months after discharge from hospital. The indicators of radical excision were good tumour-cord interface, presence of syringomyelia and histology of benign lesions. One patient had recurrence of tumour.Keywords

Hydrostatic lubrication is a type of fluid lubrication where the bearing surfaces are kept separated by a film of fluid. The pressure which supports the load on the bearing is supplied to the film by an external source like pump, accummulator etc. Hydrostatic lubrication considerably reduces friction and wear and is of practical importance in applications where load is very high like radars, big telescopes, turbines, machine tools etc.
The present paper deals with design and development of a testing rig for the study of the pressure distribution, flowrate, load capacity and hence to optimize some of its design parameters.

In this preliminary study the variations of stress-distribution are analysed in different human joints using two-dimensional finite element technique. The aim is to develop a generalised programme for any type of human joint and can be used withs uitable for the data element properties. The mathematical model accommodates experimentally measured spatial variations of the bone stiffness of different joints. Such spatial variations in bone-stiffness emphasise the inherent inhomogeneity and anistropy of bone structure. This application of two dimensional finite elment technique also analyses the human joint reconstruction with artificial prosthesis fixed with polymethyl methacrylate. It includes the solution of stress field at various locations of the reconstruction zone. The analysis of stress field will explain the different modes of failure of the bone-cement bond and the cement prosthses bond. Computer analysis of stress pattern will suggest a possible cause for disruption of blood supply in some parts of human joints. This of course helps osteotomy, to redistribute the mechanical stresses in a favourable manner to provide uninterupted blood supply. Also it will help to improve the design of better prosthesis and characterise the requirement of ideal bone cement.

ZnS nanobelts and ZnS@reduced graphene oxide (rGO) nanocomposites were synthesized via simple solvothermal treatments. The chemical composition, structure and optical properties of ZnS nanobelts and ZnS@rGO nanocomposites samples were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD),Raman Spectroscopy and FESEM, UV-visible spectroscopy. We have used UV-Visible absorption spectra to find the optical band gap of prepared ZnS nanobelts and ZnS@rGO nanocomposites, direct bandgap of pure ZnS is 2.70 eV and that in case of ZnS@rGO is about 2.59 eV. The bandgap of pure ZnS nanostructure differ significantly from bulk ZnS due to the quantum confinement effect in nanostructure. ZnS nanostructure and ZnS@rGO nanocomposites were used as a photocatalyst for the degradation of methylene blue (MB) under visible light irradiation.Keywords
