The present investigation was carried out to study the effect of pulsing and holding solutions on the vase life of cut spikes in anthurium cv. TEMPTATION. Pre-transit pulsing treatment with sodium hypochlororite 500 ppm took long days to develop spadix blackening (20 d), spathe blueing (21 d) and loss of glossiness of spathe (19 d) and recorded an increased vase-life period of 13 d over control. Cut spikes of Anthurium cv. Temptation kept in holding solution of sucrose 5 per cent + NaOCl, 16H2O - 50 ppm + kinetin - 25 ppm took maximum days for anther bursting (18d), discolouration of the spathe (29d) and vaselife period (30d). While the untreated flowers had a reduced vase-life of 15 days only. Keywords

A study was conducted to evaluate the twenty nine anthurium cultivars at Horticultural Research Station, Tamil Nadu Agricultural University, Yercaud between June 2008 and 2010 for quantitative and qualitative characters. Significant differences were observed for all the characters. In respect to the plant height cultivar Ria Bamboo Red recorded the highest plant height (73.90 cm) and Flamingo Blush Pink produced the maximum number of leaves per plant (11) and cv. Gino Orange (3.50) recorded minimum number of leaves per plant .Cultivars Lima White (4.21 no.) and Peach (3.60 no.) recorded maximum number of suckers. Linda De mole had the maximum plant spread (73.20 cm) and minimum was recorded in cv. Red KLP (32 cm). The highest leaf length was produced in Liver Red (40.84 cm) and maximum breadth (21.60 cm). In respect, to stalk length cultivar Hawaiin Red recorded the highest stalk length (64.90 cm) and Merignue Red (30.40 cm) recorded the lowest stalk length. Temptation recorded the highest spathe length (18.10 cm),spathe width (15.00 cm), spadix length of (11.5 cm) and the highest numbers of spikes per plant (9 no.). Honduras (24 d) recorded maximum vase life in water and vase life of flower on plant (23.68 d). In correlation and path co-efficients the characters viz., plant height, plant spread, leaf length, leaf breadth, stalk length, spathe length, spathe width, spadix length emerged out as important component. It could be concluded from the present investigation that out of twenty nine cultivars evaluated the Temptation, Honduras, Peach Ria Bamboo Red and Verdun Red were found to be the best cultivars with superior in qualities for cut flower production under Shevaroy condition of eastern ghat. Keywords

The investigations on gladiolus cv. WHITE PROSPERITY were carried out at the Horticultural Research Station Yercaud, Salem district, during 2009-2010 to find out the effect of biostimulants on gladiolus with reference to growth, yield and post harvest quality attributes. The experiment was laid out in Randomized Block Design consisted of three biostimulants viz., humic acid, Panchagavya, vermiwash and combinations comprising of seven treatments. Various growth characters were recorded at 15 days interval after planting. The yield components were recorded after spike emergence. The post harvest quality attributes were analysed after harvest. The physiological characters were also studied from 45 days after planting. The study revealed that, gladiolus showed better response to the foliar application of 0.2 per cent humic acid significantly. All the morphological parameters exhibited positive and better response in humic acid treatment compared to other biostimulants and its combination. The economic traits were positively influenced by humic acid application. Foliar application of 0.2 per cent humic acid led to early spike emergence (46.46 days) than control (55.33 days). The highest spike length, rachis length and number of floret per spike were higher in foliar application of 0.2 per cent humic acid. This also increased the yield of spike per plant and per square meter with regard to the post harvest quality characters, longevity of cut spike in tap water and in 2 per cent sucrose were greatly influenced by the same treatment. Foliar application of 0.2 per cent humic acid increased corm weight, corm diameter and number of cormels.

A study on diallel crossing involving nine parents, were taken up and crosses were effected in all possible combinations. Thus, a total of 72 F1 crosses and their nine parents were evaluated for various quantitative and qualitative characters. Per se performance of the parents for different traits revealed that among nine parents involved, P5 showed superiority for yield per plant. P6 was superior for single fruit weight and P2 for days to fifty per cent flowering and P2 and P3 showed highest plant height. In case of hybrids tested the cross P3 × P6 was superior for plant height, days to fifty per cent flowering and yield per plant. The combinations P6 × P4 and P6 × P8 exhibited highest single fruit weight. The magnitude of GCA variances for all the characters studied were higher than their corresponding SCA variances in all 72 crosses, suggesting that all the 18 traits studied were controlled by additive gene action. Analyzing the GCA effects of parents for various traits revealed that P2, P3 and P5 were the best general combiners for almost all the traits. The parent P1, followed by parent P3 had higher per se with higher GCA effects for most of the economic traits studied. Hence, the parents P1 and P3 could be exploited in further breeding programmes for over all tomato crop improvement. The next best choice would be P4 when the breeders aim is primarily to increase the fruit yield and quality characters. The hybrid cross P2 × P3 exhibited more number of fruiting clusters per plant and highest single fruit weight was noticed in P1 × P4 and P1 × P5. Highest yield per plant was recorded in P2 × P3.
