Women Empowerment through Self-Help Group in Tamil Nadu

The present study endeavors to analyze the impact of microcredit on the well-being of the members of Self-Help Groups (SHGs) in Tirunelveli District, Tamil Nadu. It finds that on becoming members of SHGs, members’ participation in household’s decision making had considerably improved. Further, the members borrowing for purchase of productive assets had increased after they joined SHGs. The study stresses that government should constitute a regulatory authority in order to oversee the borrowing and lending activities of SHGs.
