Abstract

In this work, we present the fabrication of hollow steel microneedles for transdermal drug delivery. Hollow steel microneedles are fabricated by laser ablation technique using femto second laser micromachining. A 4x3 array of rectangular microneedles with circular holes are fabricated. The processed hollow steel microneedles are 700 μm in height with 60 μm and 150 μm inner and outer diameters respectively.

Abstract

Under normal machining conditions using traditional processes like turning and grinding, machining of ceramics is more of a crushing process rather than a metal cutting process. An advance in the precision engineering has led to the possibility and discovery of "ductile regime machining" of these materials. Earlier studies by various authors have shown wide variations in the critical depth of cut on the same crystallographic plane. Other authors have studied the effect of crystallographic orientation on the critical depth of cut in the same plane being machined by using single Point Diamond Turning and Fly cutting methods. The present study finds these variations in the critical depth of cut of Silicon (100) by conducting nano scribing experiments using Nano Indenter. The nano scribing was performed at 60 μm/s velocity and along 0 to 360°orientations at 15 degree interval. The critical depth of cut from Nano-indenter was further verified using Optical Profiler. It was found from the experimental results that the critical depth of cut varies with the scratch direction attributing to the crystal orientation. These results agree with the more qualitative results of many previous efforts.

Abstract

Some of the artifacts used extensively as calibration masters for precision measuring instruments are made up of accurate spherical surfaces. In some of such artifacts, only a small portion of sphere is exposed (coverage area) where the diametrical methods can't be used for calibration. In addition, some of the optical elements with spherical surfaces having large radius of curvature present only small area for measurement. The methodology adopted in measuring such spherical surfaces and effect of coverage area on the accuracy of measurements along with associated uncertainty of measurement (UOM) are investigated and discussed in this paper.

Abstract

In the last few decades, the field of engineering manufacture has been greatly influenced with the application of two important concepts, namely, Computer Numerical Control and Precision Engineering. Precision Engineering has emerged as a result of synthesis of Metrology with Manufacturing processes. Application of Precision Engineering has led to the evolution of many high-tech products including Computers and their peripherals, Electro-optical systems, Biomedical devices and Consumer electronic products. It has benefited many fields and in particular in the development of Aircraft, Satellites and their Launching vehicles. The field of Precision Engineering is also being mutually benefited by these industries for its advancement. The paper explains the nature of the three branches of Precision Engineering namely, Precision engineering as applied to general engineering products, Microengineering, and Nanotechnology It also discusses the benefits and the host of products in Aerospace components and devices that have been realized with the application of Precision engineering. Abstract

Lapping is one of the techniques where form and surface roughness are controlled on surface like flat, cylindrical and spherical shape. Now a days with optimized parameters and the process is being applied to any material and shape which are not subject to plastic deformation due to their own weight or to mechanical load by machining. It is used less for finish and more for form accuracy, such as flatness in the case of flat objects or sphericity in the case of spheres. The parameters optimization is key factor for lapping spherical surface. This paper gives brief about development of Sphere Lapping Attachment for CNC Lathe with Spherical tolerance accuracy within 1 micron for lapping spherical surface with scratch-free, mirror finish high-quality surface. This Attachment is effective on stainless steel and Cobalt Chrome (Co Cr) alloyed metals.
