Abstract

Weldability of gray cast iron is poor due to the presence of graphite flakes which reduces the ductility. Welding of cast iron was conducted using shield metal arc welding process (SMAW). To analysis the cooling effects on welding strength, welding was carried out on samples with preheat, without preheat and post welding heat treatment. In this study was trying to emphasis on slowing the welding cooling rate by using insulation. Nickel based electrodes were preferred which provides soft, machinable, ductile deposit. The preheating treatment carried out at 350°C and stress relieving carried out at 621°C hold for 1hr and then cooled in furnace to room temperature. The weldability of each welding condition was evaluated through the tensile strength and hardness.

Abstract

For cutting of metallic or non metallic sheets and plates one of the advance process which is used widely now days is laser cutting. The process is generally a thermal non contact process use to produce cut surfaces and edges with highest precision and accuracy, compared to other traditional cutting methods such as abrasive water jet cutting, plasma cutting etc. In this paper optimization approach is used to determine the optimum cutting parameters which minimize the quality characteristics of the kerf such as surface roughness, kerf width, and increase material removal rate. The experiments were conducted on stainless steel 304 sheets by using L9 orthogonal array. The process parameters selected are laser power, feed and assist gas pressure. To analyze effect of process parameters on cut quality and to determine most significant process parameters among the selected process parameters which affecting surface roughness, material removal rate, kerf width (S/N) ratio and ANOVA techniques are used.

Abstract

Hard turning is one of the key process in advanced machining technology for machining of hardened steels such as tool steel, titanium, nickel alloy, Inconel etc. Hard turning process has various benefits such as increase productivity, achieve mirrorsurface finish, reduce machining time, reduction of processing costs, and improve material properties. This paper focused on optimizing of surface roughness and cutting forces in hard turning of AISI S7 tool steel using Taguchi method. The main objective of experiment was correlation between cutting parameters such as cutting environment, cutting speed, feed rate, depth of cut with surface roughness and cutting force. Four cutting parameters such as cutting environment, cutting speed, feed rate, and depth of cut, each at three levels except the cutting environment at two levels were considered. Taguchi L₁₈ orthogonal array was used as design of experiment. The S/N ratio, analysis of variance (ANOVA), main effect plots, interaction plots, and residual plots are used to find the optimal level and to analyze the effects of process parameters on surface roughness and cutting forces. The result showed that the feed rate and cutting speed are significantly affects on surface roughness; the depth of cut is significantly affects on cutting forces. The range for optimal cutting condition is proposed for various production industries.
