Academic libraries in this knowledge and technology driven society continue to dominate in providing access to information to their clientele like students, scholars, academicians, and other information seekers. Presently, their role becomes critical as they act as a catalyst and connector by linking students, scholars, and information together for generating new insights into teaching and learning. Academic libraries can play effective role in delivering their services, provided a positive culture is created and promoted for library staff. It calls for the role of university librarians to focus on developing healthy culture in libraries through delivering sound leadership practices which would eventually enhance library staff’s performance in serving their stakeholders better. Keeping the above facts in view, the present paper is aimed to examine the impact of leadership practices on organisational culture in select university libraries. The present study targeted 120 library staff from two universities in Jammu & Kashmir (J&K). Simple random sampling was used to gather information from respondents. Multifactor Leadership Questionnaire (MLQ Form 5X) developed by (Bass & Avolio, 1995) was used to measure leadership practices, whereas OCTAPACE values were adapted from HRD Climate Survey developed by Rao and Abraham (1986) to study organisational culture. The reliability of constructs varied from 0.74 to 0.82 and from 0.71 to 0.85 in leadership practices and organisational culture, respectively. The data collected were analysed using descriptive and inferential statistics. The findings of the study revealed that leadership practices significantly influence organisational culture in university libraries. On the basis of the findings, the study suggests that leadership practices prevailing in sample select libraries need to be more effective and result oriented which would develop sound and positive culture at their workplaces.Keywords

Universities are considered crucial in dissemination of knowledge and information and play a significant role in generation of human capital. Over the years, universities are forced to develop as centres of excellence while catering to the needs of its employees, students and society at large. A university can become a driving force provided it fulfils the aspirations of its stakeholders by adopting innovative techniques and strategies in its processes, structure and importantly in its academic and administrative functioning. It calls for continuous innovation and development in managing change and in facing complex nature of global academic environment. Keeping this in view, the present paper is an attempt to assess the employee perception towards organizational learning practices prevailing in sample select institution namely, the University of Kashmir. The present study targeted 100 teaching personnel from five faculties/schools of the university. Simple random sampling technique was adopted to gather information from the respondents. The data collected were analysed using descriptive and inferential statistics. Results of the study revealed that employees perceived a favourable attitude towards their organizational learning practices. The findings of the study also revealed that female teaching staff had shown more satisfaction level regarding organizational learning as compared to male teaching staff. On the basis of the research findings, it is stressed that learning organization practices prevailing in sample study institution need to be further enriched and improved, which would help in developing a sound and effective academic institution.Keywords

The effectiveness of educational institutions in this competitive and knowledge-driven environment can be made better if they value and recognize their faculty members by providing them with conducive atmosphere at their workplaces. It can be achieved if educational institutions bring qualitative changes through promotion of sound quality of work life (QWL). QWL is vital not only for improving employee performance, but it also helps in enhancing institutional progress. In this regard, the role of academic leaders can be very effective in promoting sound culture in their institutions, which would foster commitment and satisfaction level of their staff. In the present study, an attempt has been made to examine the relationship between transformational leadership and QWL in sample study institutions. Moreover, the study will also analyse the impact of transformational leadership on QWL. The respondents of the study comprise of 143 faculty members taken from five constituent colleges in Srinagar district. The data whatsoever collected were analysed using SPSS 20.0. Version. The findings of the study revealed that there exists a positive relationship between transformational leadership and QWL. Moreover, the results of the study revealed that transformational leadership positively and significantly influences QWL in sample study institutions. The study suggests that transformational leadership needs to be further strengthened in order to enhance QWL in sample study institutions.Keywords

The present knowledge-driven economy – coupled with market pressures, competitive work environment and advancement in technologies – is posing numerous challenges to organizations, in general, and higher educational institutions, in particular. In this regard, academic institutions need to become as centre of excellence with focus on enriching the developmental aspects of their employees both teaching and non teaching staff who contribute significantly towards institution building process. Academic heads need to involve and engage their workforce towards organizational growth by entrusting them with academic and administrative assignments and responsibilities. They need to be inspired and guided by leaders so that they can be more effective and result oriented. It calls for the role of transformational leaders to instil a sense of commitment and dedication amongst their followers. Keeping this in view, the present article is aimed to examine the effect of transformational leadership on employee engagement in some sample select institutions. It will also explore the relationship that exists between them. The findings of the study revealed that there exists a positive relationship between transformational leadership and employee engagement. It is also revealed from the results that employee engagement is positively influenced by transformational leadership. The findings of the study suggest that transformational leadership needs to be further enhanced in order to enrich employee engagement in the sample study institutions.Keywords

Organizational culture plays a critical role in improving employee performance and organizational effectiveness. A favourable culture is a prerequisite for the overall success of any institution irrespective of their size, control, and nature of work. An unhealthy work culture is detrimental for organizational growth and development. It calls for the role of academic leaders to bring qualitative changes towards developing their institutional culture. Academic leaders are considered important pillars for institution building and as such their role is pivotal in facilitating and promoting sound institution culture. Keeping this in view, the present study is aimed to examine the relationship between transformational leadership and OCTAPACE Culture and subsequently to study the effect of transformational leadership on OCTAPACE Culture. Moreover, the present study is also aimed to analyse the perception of academic staff across demographic variable namely designation. Simple random sampling technique has been employed to gather information from the respondents comprising of 220 teaching staff engaged from four universities from within the state of J&K. The data whatsoever collected were analysed using descriptive and inferential statistics. Results of the study revealed that there is a positive and significant relationship between transformational leadership practices and OCTAPACE Culture in the sample select universities; moreover, transformational leadership significantly influences OCTAPACE Culture. Further on the basis of the research findings, it was found that variable designation significantly influences transformational leadership while teaching perception towards OCTAPACE Culture did not significantly vary across designation. The study findings suggest that transformation leadership and OCTAPACE Culture prevailing in sample study universities need to be more strengthened, which would ensure to develop healthy work culture. Moreover, academicians and policy makers must take into consideration the relevance of transformational leadership for improving OCTAPACE Culture for better performance and in making institutions more competitive, effective, and result oriented.Keywords

The present era of knowledge-based economy has posed immense challenge before organisations, particularly academic institutions, to identify the talent and potential of their human resource for developing them as knowledge workers. Keeping this in view, the present study is aimed to examine the perception of respondents towards HR practices prevailing in sample select institutions. The present study targeted 120 teaching personnel from five constituent colleges of Cluster University Srinagar. Simple random sampling technique was employed to gather information from the respondents. The data whatsoever collected were analysed using SPSS 20 version. The findings of the study depicted that respondents showed favourable satisfaction level towards HR practices. The findings of the study suggest that HR practices in sample institutions need to be further enriched and improved so that they will help in developing human capital which would eventually result in better institutional performance.Keywords

Higher educational institutions in the present dynamic environment are coupled with enormous pressure to meet the aspirations and expectations of stakeholders in general and society in particular. Institutions of any background have got significance in contributing towards nation building and the role of education sector becomes all more crucial. The higher educational institutions, especially the universities are the agencies of developing human resources of the country and are charged to serve people by developing their knowledge, skills and personality including their values and attitudes. The development of world class educational institutions is debated at local, national and global platforms. Policy makers and academicians focus on how to build such institutions which meet global academic standards and contribute towards national economy. In this respect, the role of academic leaders becomes pivotal in creating, developing and transforming institutions by adopting institution building practices. The present study makes an attempt to examine and establish linkages between leadership and institution building practices. The respondents of this study consist of 162 teaching staff taken from four universities in J and K. The finding of the study reveals that there exist a favourable and significant relationship between leadership and institution building practices. The measures for improving leadership practices for institution building and other policy implications have been discussed.Keywords
