Comparative Study of Selected Sector Equity Mutual Funds

India's mutual fund market has witnessed phenomenal growth over the last decade. The consistency in the performance of mutual funds has been a major factor that has attracted many investors. The present research is an attempt to study comparative performance of selected mutual funds. The study focus on selected mutual fund schemes of selected Indian companies comprising Equity Schemes. The total 17 sector equity mutual funds are selected for the study. The performance of selected mutual funds is analyzed with the help of Return, risk (standard Deviation), and Sharpe ratio.

The average annual return for the sector equity mutual fund is 31.06 percent for the selected mutual funds. The average annual return is highest at 45.68 percent for ICICI Prudential Technology Fund - Regular Plan whereas average annual return is lowest at 17.02 percent for Kotak PSU Bank ETF. The average standard deviation is 43.70 for the sector equity mutual fund. The standard deviation is highest at 59.64 for Franklin Infotech Fund whereas standard deviation is lowest at 22.56 for ICICI Prudential FMCG Fund - Regular Plan for the period 2009-14.The Sharpe ratio signifying the performance of mutual fund is highest at 1.088 for SBI FMCG Fund whereas it is lowest at 0.199 for Kotak PSU Bank ETF for the period 2009-14.The average Sharpe ratio 0.59 for the sector equity mutual funds of selected Indian companies.

Thus it is concluded that some sector equity mutual funds have performed better than others and generated better returns for the investors during 2009-10 to 2013-14.
