The Narasapur Forests lie between 77°35'-78°55' E longitudes and 17°34'- 18°20' N latitudes. Botanical explorations were undertaken in this area during the months of September, 1958 and April, 1959.
The top soil is sandy to clayey loam with rocks consisting of pink and grey granites. The climate is moist and hot, the temperature varying from 14°C to 40°C. The annual rainfall is 91 cm., mainly precipitated by south-west monsoon.
The vegetation of this region presents the scrub jungle at low elevations with dominant species Gymnosporia spinosa associated with Diospyros melanoxylon and Lagerstroemia parviflora. Patches of grasslands in the scrub jungle show herbs like Borreria hispida, Phyla nodiflora and Striga euphrasioides and grasses Chloris virgaita and Iseilema laxum. As the altitude rises the scrub jungle gradually changes into mixed deciduous forests. The transitional zone is characterised by large populations of Cissus adnata. Butea monosperma is the dominant species in these forests associated with Madhuca indica, Tectona grandis and Terminalia bellerica. The undergrowth is mainly formed by Bridelia montana, Cleistanthus collinus, Olax scandens, Habenaria platyphylla and Sclerocarpus africanus. The lakes and ponds present large populations of Aponogeton natans, Lagarosiphon alternifolius and Nymphaea stellata.
Families Leguminosae, Gramineae and Cyperaceae are well represented in the flora of this region.

The Cumbum Valley and Pachakumatchi Hills are situated to the south-west of Madurai Town and lie between 77°12' and 77°30' E and 9°30' and 9°50' N. Three seasonal explorations were conducted in the months of June 1959, October 1959 and April 1960. The Pteridophyte vegetation is rich in the Pachakumatchi Hills where the humidity is high and the altitude reaches 1600 m. A total number of 50 species representing 14 families and 35 genera were collected and enumerated. The classification of Copeland is followed. Out of the plants listed, Pteridaceae is well represented, and next in order being Aspidiaceae and Polypodiaceae (sensu stricto).Full Text

In the present paper, the vascular plants of Andaman and Nicobar Islands, belonging to 204 families, 1045 genera and 2315 species have been put to their exact life forms and percentage belonging to each life form class. The same has been compared with Raunkiaer's normal and other spectra determined in different parts of the country. Phanerophytes, Chamaephytes, Hemicryptophytes, Geophytes or Cryptophytes, Therophytes, Lianas and Epiphytes represent 49.40, 12.14, 7.48, 3.37, 12.31, 9.49 and 5.81 percentage respectively and it has been found that the phyto-climate of these islands is typical phanerophytic which is characteristic of the humid tropics and subtropics.Full Text

The true Euphorbia hypericifolia L., was long beleived to be represented only in the New World. According to Boissier, E. hypericifolia L., does not belong to Asia. After critical studies made on a large number of herbarium speciemens and field observations it became clear that E. hypericifolia is an introduction and was in India only for the last 4-5 decades. The major distinguishing features of this species is its erect habit, glabrous nature, axillary or terminal clustered cyathia, stalked rounded glands, subspherical glabrous capsules and finely ovoid convex-faced wrinkled seeds.Full Text
