Abstract

Glaucocystis Itzigsohn is an apoplastic alga containing blue-green endosymbionts (cyanelles). Status of this genus is being discussed in light of recent findings. Out of the five species known fiom Indian region, Glaucocystins nostochinearum Itzigsohn and G. reniformis Prasad are being described and illustrated. These two species are new records fiom West Bengal and Eastern India.

Abstract

During the systemic investigations on the desmid biodiversity of Eastern Himalaya the authors visited various regions of Namchi, South Sikkim, India and recorded 12 taxa belonging to the 6 genera viz. Desmidium C. Agardhex Ralfs, Hyalotheca Ehrenberg ex Ralfs, Micrasterias C. Agardhex Ralfs, Pleurotaenium Nageli, Spondylosium Brebisson ex Kutzing and Staurastrum Meyen ex Ralfs. Three taxa Pleurotaenium ehrenbergii (Brebisson) de Bary var. crenulatum (Ehrenberg) Krieger f. crenulatum, Staurastrum botanense Playfair var. botanense and Micrasterias alata Wall have been recorded as new to Indian flora. The remaining taxa are new record for Sikkim&Eastern Himalaya.

Abstract

Nostochopsis Wood ex Bornet et Flahault is an uncommon genus with a tropical/pantropical in distribution. The present paper deals first report of N. lobata Wood ex Bornet et Flahault 1886 from Dooars region of West Bengal along with its detailed morphology and an illustration. Observation on various types of heterocysts in its natural form and their importance in context to the edible value have also been highlighted.

Abstract

A rare freshwater unicellular red alga Flintiella sanguinaria F. D. Ott has been reported for the first time from India. It is a monotypic taxon and a rare alga. The alga was found growing as powdery covering on moist burnt soil of a damp paddy field from Rajhat, Chinsurah, West Bengal and collected in the month of January. It has been reported from very few localities of the world. Probably, this is the first report of the genus and species from the Asian subcontinent.

Abstract

Five representatives belonging to the family Characeae have been studied under the genus Chara L. viz., Chara fibrosa C. Agardh ex Bruzelius, Chara socotrensis Nordst., Chara zeylanica Klein ex Willd., Chara vulgaris L. and Chara hydropithys Rchb. occurring in West Bengal. The studies have been done under stereo zoom and Field emission Scanning Electron Microscope (FeSEM). FeSEM observations for the morphology of oospores are the first time in Eastern India. The occurrence of Chara socotrensisis Nordst. reported for the first time from Eastern India.
