Examined the pollen morphology of 5 species of Butea Roxb. ex Willd. (s.l.) from India. The taxonomic status of the genus is discussed and the seggetation of sections Meizotropis and Spatholobus from Butea is supported.

Abstract

Eleven taxa of the Nymphaeaceae (s. l.) belonging to five genera viz., BRASENIA , EURYALE , NYMPHAEA, NELUMBO and VICTORIA were examined for the present study. NELUMBO pollen is quite distinct from other genera of Nymphaeaceae in having 3-zonocolpate apertures and reticulate exine. In VICTORIA pollen are shed as permanent tetrads, while in BRASENIA, EURYALE and NYMPHAEA pollen are produced as monads. The pollen grains are l-(2)-aperturate, zoni or zonasulculate and hetero-or iso-polar. Exine surface is spinate, tuberculate, verrucate, granulate or psilate. The application of pollen characters within the family is discussed.

There is a lot of confusion in the identity of Eragrostis atrovirens (Desf.) Trin. ex Steud., E. gangetica (Roxb.) Steud. and E. nutans (Retz.) Nees ex Wight & Am. resulting in many wrongly identified sheets in various herbaria and also confusing descriptions in literature. Based on detailed study this problem has now been resolved. Table given shows actual differences among the three species. Key for identification and authentic descriptions and images of spikelets and caryopses have also been provided.

Abstract

Eragrostis jainii, a new species collected from Manjeshwar, Kannur District of Kerala is illustrated and described. This species is allied to E. unioloides (Retz.) Nees ex Steud. and E. mokensis Pilg. From the former species it differs mainly by the linear panicle with branches adpressed to the main axis, more compact and sharply acute spikelet, thick and wavy rachilla, acuminate lemma, narrow and acuminate palea with ciliate keels. It differs from E. mokensis by the inflorescence branches adpressed to the main axis, spikelets apex not bluntly acute, lemma not orbicular, palea keels ciliate, stamens 2 and absence of a glandular ring below the nodes.

Abstract

A study on the caryopses morphology of Indian Eragrostis Wolf using Light Microscope and Scanning Electron Microscope is presented. A total of 44 species have been studied. Emphasis has been given to their shape, dimensions, colour, outline in cross section and surface features. The shape varies from ovoid, obovoid, ellipsoid, oblong with truncate or obtuse ends, globose, subglobose, prism like and angled with or without lateral grooves. In cross section the shape varies from circular, cordate, obcordate, ovate and obovate etc. Surface cell reticulations are mostly narrow and rectangular.

Abstract

In grass systematics, leaf epidermal features are very significant for classifying the difficult groups, within subfamilies and tribes. But the micromorphological studies on grasses are very limited. Therefore, foliar micromorphological characters for 24 taxa of the subtribe Sporobolinae Benth. (Poaceae) from India have been studied by using Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM) in detail and the surface features were documented. All the 24 taxa studied were found to have three types of surface features, one of the most useful characters to delimit the species and genera in the subtribe. Abstract

Mode of spikelet disarticulation in Eragrostis amabilis, E. ciliaris, E. ciliata, E. coarctata, E. deccanensis, E. riparia and E. viscosa are similar i.e., from apex downwards. Furthermore, they are interrelated in a number of morphological as well as floral characters. Hence, their circumscription and identity have considerable confusions in India. The present study provides the reliable taxonomic characters to distinguish them unambiguously.

Abstract

The caryopses morphology of 16 taxa out of 18 taxa of Sporobolus (Poaceae) found in India is examined under Optical and Scanning Electron Microscopes. The macro- and micro-morphological characters such as shape, size, thickness (in cross section), embryo percentage, colour and surface testa ornamentation pattern were critically analysed to evaluate their taxonomic significance in the delimitation and identification of each taxon. Further, a bracketed dichotomous taxonomic key is provided here based on caryopses morphology to facilitate precise identification.
