Wild rices of Asia have been variously referred to by different workers as Oryza perennis, O. fatua, Oerufipogon, O. sativa var. fatua, O. saliva L. f. spontanea, O. balunga, O. formosana etc. Validity of each of these names and their application to the taxa are discussed and it is concluded that (i) the name O. perennis is to be discarded, (ii) valid name for perennial wild rice of Asia is O. rufipogon and (iii) annual wild rice of Asia lacks a valid name.
