Cordaites wood collected from an abandoned mine pit near Samla colliery in the Raniganj Coalfield is permineralised by siderite and marcasite. The in situ upright stem contains kaolinite in the core. The fossil wood is identified as a new species of Cordaites-Mesoxylon samlaensis Madabhushi, 1987. While the Artisia (pith) is kaolinized, the Amyelon (ischolar_main) is turned into coal. The paragenesis of cellular permineralisation inferred is: sideritisation-marcasitisation-feldspathisation-coalification-limonitisation-kaolinisation.- Linear Ash-Moisture Relation of Coal Seams in a Borehole Drilled in Chuperbhita Coalfield, Bihar

Six regional seams and six local seams were intersected in a borehole RJC-10 drilled during April-July 1976 in Chuperbhita coalfield of Rajmahal hills, Bihar. The Ash-Moisture relations of these seams is strikingly linear in this particular borehole. A correlation with lithofacies has indicated that RJC-10 is in a zone of relatively lower Sandstone/Shale and Clastic ratios. The water of hydration of inorganic constituents present as combined water of 'hygroscopic' moisture in the finer sediments could have been expelled in a gradual and linear manner with increase in depth. Keywords

Three anomalous zones of (i) Low planktonic foraminifera; (ii) High agglutinated foraminifera and (iii) Low-Globorotalia (Menardella) menardii and no-Bathysiphon filiormis are identified in the Exclusive Economic Zone off Godavari delta to Puri. The deviation from Wright-van Marle model of zone (i) can most probably be due to the non-production of Neogloboquadrina dutertrei and Globigerinoides ruber in the top water layers owing to a higher salinity zone probably created by the current patterns. The counter currents of low salinity are probably responsible for the Bathysiphon filiformis dominant zone, (ii) The path of the low salinity under water currents is probably marked by the no- Bathysiphon filiformis, low-Globorotalia (Menardella) menardii zone. Keywords
