Abstract

The paper outlines the preliminary results of a palynological study of a carbonaceous phyllite sample from the B Member of the Jutogh Formation of Simla hills. Systematic descriptions are given for 5 genera and 6 species of acritarch assemblage recovered. Among the species described, five are new. Microfloral evidence favours a Lower Cambrian age for the bed.

Abstract

The vertical distribution of significant phytoplankton, spore-pollen and foraminiferal guide fossils are detailed with special reference to palyno-stratigraphic investigations in the South Shillong Plateau. The diagnostic features of the Maestrichtian-Danian-Palaeocene intervals are summarised. Biostratigraphic evidences favour the placing of the Mesozoic-Cainozoic boundary between the Mahadeo Formation (Maestrichtian) and the overlying Langpar Formation (Danian).

Abstract

Stratigraphic status of Yong Limestone has been formally instituted following the Code of Stratigraphic Nomenclature of India. A reasonably rich palynological assembIage, consisting of 11 Chitinozoan and 9 scolecodont forms, have been recorded from this stratal sequence. Chitinozoan evidence indicates that Yong Limestone may be a time transgressive unit. The Ordovician-Silurian boundary perhaps lies within the lower part of this formation.
