Abstract

Establishing discharge-drawdown relationship for steady state flow in limited confined aquifers by established methods is difficult. A graphical solution for establishing this relationship in rectangular aquifers, with well at the centre and at least a portion of the boundary with constant potentials, is proposed. The method has been worked out from studies of finite element method which can beextended to any shape of the aquifer and eccentric positioning of the wells in the aquifer. Results obtained from FEM have been varified by field studies.

Abstract

At the initial stage of pumping, the discharge-drawdown relationship in a limited confined aquifer is identical to that of an extensive aquifer followed by a transition-period during which the zero-drawdown contour moves from the nearest to the farthest boundary. After that the time-rate of increase in drawdown assumes a constant value. A graphical method is proposed in this paper to calculate the drawdown at a place due to unsteady flow in a limited confined aquifer.
