Abstract

The paper gives an account of the Orbitolines found in the limestone intercalations associated with volcanic rocks of Dras, Jammu and Kashmir state. One new genus, with characters intermediate between Orbitolina d'Orbigny and Iragia Henson along with three species of Orbilolina and ?Birbalina are recorded. The Foraminifera indicate a Barremian to Aptian age for the limestone intercalations and associated volcanic rocks.

Abstract

The term 'Kota flora' is generally applied to the plant fossils reported from the plant beds of the Kota group as defined by King. This flora having an intermediate status stratigraphically between Early Jurassic 'Rajmahal flora' and Late Jurassic to to Early Cretaceous 'Jabalpur flora' is involved in two controversies. The first controversy relates to the Liassic fish fauna found in Kota limestone overlying the plant beds in the Godavari valley area; the second relates to Early Cretaceous marine fauna found associated with this Middle to Late Jurassic flora. The paper presents a stratigraphic appraisal of this controversial flora in the light of recent mapping, palynological and radiometric data available from related Upper Gondwana formations. These point to the possibility that Rajmahal Trap and Deccan Trap flows were initiated probably during Aptian times (Early Cretaceous).

Abstract

The occurrence of Early Jurassic mammalian parts which are microscopic consisting of teeth, mandibles with attached teeth, limb bones, vertibrae, pelvic and pectoral girdles and broken skull portions, have been found for the first time in the marly clay of the Kota Formation from Yamanpalli area in Pranhita Godavari Valley of Andhra Pradesh, India. Also occurring with these micromammalian remains are interesting microscopic eggs. The paper gives an account of the stratigraphic setting of the horizon yielding the micromammalian fossils and fossil evidences that support Early Jurassic age for the Kota Formation.

Abstract

An interesting assemblage of microbiota consisting of filamentous, coccoid and asteroid forms in a stromatolitic black chert sample from Cumbum Formation of Upper Cuddapah sequence, near Zangamarajupalle, Andhra Pradesh is recorded. The microbiota associated with the columnar stromatolite, is dominated by filamentous forms over the coccoids. All the morphotypes reported here from Cumbum Formation are known from the Gunflint chert of Canada dated to be about 1900 to 2000 m years.

Abstract

The note records the presence of a new Pholadomyid lamellibranch belonging to Goniomya from the Upper Cretaceous rocks of Tamil Nadu. The form is assignable to the subgenus Goniomya and is described as a new species Goniomya (Goniomya) stoliczkai. Systematic description and the stratigraphic distribution of this new species is presented.

Abstract

Two outliers of reefoid limestone similar to those at the base of Uttattur Group, are described three to four km away from the main Cretaceous patch indicating that the Cretaceous marine transgression extended much beyond the present day western limit of the preserved Cretaceous sediments.
