Abstract

During the course of clay investigation near Kalidhang, District Sirmur, Himachal Pradesh, some well preserved plant leaves were found in the varve type clays and a sample of it was also analysed for pollen studies. This note records interesting pollens of Pinus roxburghie. Gramineae, Oleaceae Quercus etc., including an abnorma13-winged pollen of Pinus and a large sized Gramineae pollen.

Abstract

It is a valley type glacier with compound basin and comprises a large cirque at the higher reaches. The frontal part of snout is prominent and concave in shape. Lunate and bowl shaped lakes have been noticed on the glacier surface. The glacier has experienced two major periods of shrinkage in the recent past. It has retreated 650m between 1921 and 1968 and 125 m between 1968 and 1979 with an average retreat of about 13.1 m annually. It also shows vertical shrinkage of 40m.

Abstract

This note records some Prunus sp., Mallotus philippinensis Muell, and Celtis sp. from Kalidhang in district Sirmur, Himachal Pradesh. These plant fossils were found embedded in varve like clay around Kalidhang during the course of the field investigation in 1975-76. The geological set-up and the plant assemblage indicate a sub-Recent age for the clay beds.
