Cladding on a surface may serve two fold functions; one is to improve surface dependent properties like resistance to wear under abrasion, erosion and corrosion, and the other is to enhance the bulk dependent properties like hardness, strength, etc. that is known as hardfacing. Clad components are expected to have capabilities of serving its specific function in a hostile environment for a sufficiently long time economically. For this, there is increasing demand of clad components in various industries like chemical, naval, mining, agriculture, power generation, etc. day by day. On the other hand, tool manufacturers use cladding techniques more and more in producing tools like rollers, dies, jaws, etc. which should possess high hardness and large compressive strength. Cladding through welding is one popular and versatile method. In this paper, various methods, especially, different welding techniques, used for depositing a layer to cover a surface, and in particular, cladding, are discussed mentioning their applications. Various characteristics of clad components are reviewed with reference to parametric optimization, microstructure and corrosion resistance properties.Keywords

Due to the demand of the manufacturing industry for high production-rate machining, ceramic tool material plays an important role. In this work, alumina (Al2O3) matrix composite reinforced with 0.3 vol.% multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) was prepared by hot-press sintering at a temperature of 1550°C under uniaxial load of 2.5 MPa. This developed nanocomposite having increased hardness, fracture toughness and flexural strength compared to monolithic Al2O3 was then used as a cutting tool insert with a nose radius of 1 mm for machining AISI 1060 steel rod under different machining conditions. Cutting force was measured and chip forms were observed at different levels of machining parameters to evaluate the machining performance of the tool insert. Results obtained from turning experiments show promising applicability of the developed 0.3 vol.% MWCNT/Al2O3 cutting tool insert.Keywords

Conventional fluid delivery system is not much effective to reduce heat generation due to presence of a stiff air layer covering the periphery of grinding wheel. Thermal damages in grinding a super alloy are stringent and problematic. In this paper, a report on the experimental investigation carried out on grinding a nickel based super alloy, Inconnel-600 is made. Different infeeds are considered with dry, wet and wet with pneumatic barrier conditions. To break the stiff air layer covering grinding wheel, high pressure air jet is employed just above the conventional grinding fluid nozzle to facilitate grinding fluid reach the wheel-workpiece interface area. This is termed as a pneumatic barrier. Grinding performance under these environmental conditions has been investigated. Results show better grinding performance with the application of pneumatic barrier in the wet condition as it tends to facilitate fluid reach deep inside the grinding zone effectively.Keywords

A robot gripper is used for grasping and holding different components. Action of a gripper emulates working of fingers of a human hand. In this paper, first a brief review on flexible gripping systems is made. By incorporating flexibility in gripper, gripping relatively large weight of various shapes becomes possible. Four flexible materials are explored to apply to grip different objects, and comparison of force requirement for this is next reported. Maximum amount of weight that can be gripped with a flexible gripping material is also found out. Thermocole, among all four flexible gripping materials tested, needs the least grasping force to grasp a weight.Keywords

Transportation of ores from mines to distant processing plants can be done in different ways. One method, which is found to be suitable in certain situations, is to carry magnetite through a pipeline in the form of solid-liquid slurry. For smooth flow of slurry, maintaining appropriate slurry viscosity along with flow pressure and flow velocity is essential. The Neural Networks (NN) algorithm can be used to find out the condition to guarantee smooth transportation process of magnetite-water slurry. In the present work, experiments are conducted to determine the effect of solids concentration, particle size and additive on the apparent viscosity of magnetite ore water slurry. The back propagation type Neural Networks (NN), constructed based on experimental results, is utilized to estimate apparent, or dynamic, viscosity of magnetite-water slurry under different parametric conditions. The NN model outputs show good prediction of apparent viscosity of the slurry, and hence, the applicability of the system adopted.Keywords

In grinding, high heat is generated at the grinding zone per unit volume of material removed. To control this temperature, generally, grinding fluid is employed. Due to formation of a stiff air layer around the grinding wheel, grinding fluid cannot enter easily inside the grinding zone. In this experimental work, formation of air layer around a rotating grinding wheel has been investigated to observe variation of air layer pressure around the wheel periphery under different wheel speeds. Bare wheel, rexine-pasted wheel and bare wheel with pneumatic barrier set up have been employed to find out their effect on formation of air layer. Significantly less air layer pressure is noted around the wheel with both faces rexine-pasted, and using pneumatic barrier set up. In aggregate, about 50% reduction in the air layer pressure is achieved in the pneumatic barrier set up compared to that with the rexine-pasted wheel. Pneumatic barrier set up is thus quite effective to facilitate grinding fluid reach deep inside the grinding zone.Keywords

Burrs are plastically deformed projected materials attached to an edge, and are generated during machining and other processes. Burrs should be removed for smooth assembly operations and handling of the job. Chemical deburring may be employed for low alloy steel and aluminium alloy using nitric acid and sodium hydroxide solutions respectively as chemicals. In the present work, holes are first drilled on low alloy steel and aluminium plates when burrs are formed around the hole at the exit surface. These are dipped into respective solution to keep for few minutes for deburring. Burrs are removed completely after some time, and some thickness loss of the base metal is also occurred. High grinding zone temperature often results in several grinding defects. For controlling this, usually large amount of grinding fluid is applied. However, synthetic grinding fluid or cutting fluid has some adverse impact on environment, and, hence, researchers are trying to reduce the application of grinding fluid. In this experimental investigation, a specially developed compound nozzle is used for delivering grinding fluid. Fluid may reach easily into grinding zone at low discharge by using this nozzle. Discharge of the nozzle is about 52% less than conventional flood cooling. Grinding results obtained under different environment are compared. It is found that better grinding performance is obtained by using this compound nozzle than conventional flood cooling grinding; as consumption of grinding fluid is substantially reduced, use of compound nozzle may be more economical and advantageous to control industrial pollution.Keywords

Submerged arc welding process is usually employed for welding of thick workpieces. Quality of submerged arc welded components depends on various factors. Selection of appropriate process parameters for joining metallic components is needed to obtain sound weldment. Many researchers carried out investigations to find out appropriate process conditions to obtain quality submerged arc welded components with typical applications. In the present work, Taguchi's L9 orthogonal array is used to find out the parameter combinations of the experiments to perform. Weld current, weld speed and type of flux are varied to three levels to find out the appropriate condition to obtain desired bead-on-plate quality within the domain of experimental conditions chosen. It is found out that at a weld current of 400 A, welding speed of 450 mm/min and with flux with basicity index of 1.2, desired weld deposition can be obtained.Keywords

Grinding fluids, commonly termed as coolants, play a vital role in controlling the heat produced during the process and the consequent thermal damage associated with it. These fluids are to be applied into the grinding zone in a suitable and effective manner, so as to reduce the heat generated and to carry away the heat produced as well as for efficient chip disposal. In this work, three different methods, namely normal flood cooling, mist cooling and multi-nozzle cooling arrangements are employed for delivering the fluid into the grinding zone. A comparative study is made among the three coolant delivery systems to assess the grinding performance. It is found that the multi-nozzle cooling arrangement produces best results in terms of force requirement and ground surface quality.Keywords

Nuts and bolts are widely used fastening elements in industrial and household applications. They offer a good amount of tightening load to remain in the fastened element and also cause easy assembly and disassembly. However, they are also subject to loosening under transverse vibration. Therefore, fasteners need be properly selected according to their applications or else they may cause fatal mishaps by their loosening. In the present work, an effort has been made to evaluate a comparative study of loosening tendency of various threaded fasteners. Tests have been carried out on 3/8 BSW Stainless Steel and High Tension Steel Bolts fitted with different nuts and washers. Tests were carried out on an indigenously made testing rig. The decrease in clamping force has been recorded at regular intervals. Then a comparative study of the loosening tendency of the threaded fasteners is made to find out one having good resistance to loosening under hostile vibration condition.Keywords

Incorporation of appropriate inventory management system plays an important role in determining the financial health of a manufacturing company. In most of the cases, unjustified inventory of raw materials are kept causing certain loss to the company. Keeping the above in mind, in the present work, a task is undertaken to find out relevant items that need stringent inventory management in one manufacturing company. The inventory of raw materials is classified into seven categories of which four categories of raw materials are found to cover around 70% of the total inventory.
Since it is difficult to apply proper inventory control model for each item separately because of its huge variety, it is necessary to find out few significant items using 'Selective Control' method. ABC and FSN analyses along with XYZ analysis are done. The analysis shows the state of the present inventory management. Following the desire of the management, AFX study is also undertaken. Rigorous indent control and consumption control are strongly recommended for items that has maximum financial impact and high demand in production shops.

At the exit edge of the wokpiece, burrs are usually found during shaping operation. Gradual rotation of the positive shear plane to the negative shear plane may be the reason behind it. This is due to absence of any support material at the exit end of cut. In the present work, a number of orthogonal shaping experiments is performed on aluminium alloy (4600-M) in dry environment under different cutting velocities, orthogonal rake angles and exit edge bevel angles to observe the occurrence of burr formation. Experimental results are analysed through ANOVA to find out the significance of the effect of cutting parameters and exit edge bevel angle to control the exit burr formation. It is noted that exit edge bevel angle has the most significant effect. An exit edge bevel angle of 15° is recommended in shaping operation when burr becomes negligible.Keywords

A burr is an undesirable projection of material formed in machined parts that makes handling as well as assembly of machine parts difficult, and hence, it needs be subsequently removed or its formation needs be suppressed to allow the parts to meet specified tolerances. One way of reducing milling burr formation may be to prevent the tool from exiting the work piece. From this idea, in-plane exit angle is varied in the present work aiming at minimization of burr formation. The experimental observation is analyzed to recommend the condition when burr formation becomes negligible, or eliminated, thereby increasing productivity as the need of deburring will be either not required, or, required to a very less extent.Keywords

In Abrasive Water Jet Machining (AWJM), abrasive particles suspended in high pressure water are impinged on work surface for removal of excess materials. A nozzle is fitted in front of workpiece to provide high velocity jet. In this work, appropriate machining condition is tried to evaluate to yield minimum surface roughness by employing Response Surface Methodology (RSM) while machining low carbon steel. Radius of curvature is also observed during abrasive water jet machining. A statistical model is generated for predicting surface roughness. It is observed that at low feed rate condition, better surface is obtained expectedly.Keywords

This paper concerns with machinability study by judging cutting force, chip formed and chip reduction coefficient while finish turning of AISI 52100 steel employing a number of tool inserts in wet environment. This kind of steel is utilized in constructing different structures, equipment, etc. Turning tests are carried out with varying speed-feed combinations. Narrow groove, plain (without any groove) and wide groove coated carbide inserts are used. Chip formed, cutting force components, etc. are observed. From the results obtained, some conditions are tried to explore corresponding to desired machinability. Good machining performance is reported with plain tool insert at the cutting velocity of 161 m/min and 253 m/min within the scope of the present work.Keywords

Good number of exercise problems, and their solutions (325 Problems solved) are given. Overall treatment of the subject is good. However, there are some formatting issues, and question-answer serial number mismatching detected in p.22, p.46, pp.73-74, pp.90-92, p.122, p.176 and p.283. In the ever prospering manufacturing sector, titanium is considered as an important material due to its mechanical properties, but grinding of titanium is quite a challenging task that needs necessary attention in order to improve its grindability. Past research works reported the success of sub-zero degree cooling for enhancing grindability of several materials. The present experimental work explores the effect of application of environment friendly liquid CO2 during grinding of titanium grade I alloy compared to that under dry condition. Grindability of silicon carbide and alumina wheel is investigated and compared. Experimental results indicate that alumina wheel performs better with liquid CO2 than SiC wheel and that in dry condition while grinding titanium grade I. Therefore, liquid CO2 based cooling system may be used in industry with alumina wheel when grinding titanium grade I.Keywords

Every year large number of engineering graduates and diploma holders pass out of engineering colleges and universities. However, a sizeable number of them are not simply employable. Again, the growth of the manufacturing sector has almost become stagnant globally, so also in India. And economic recession is still looming large in different walks of life. Direct effect is that employment opportunities of engineering students are on the wane. Moreover, appropriate skilling and training are not provided to students pursuing engineering education in many of the institutions having lack of laboratory facilities and suitable man power to impart desired education and training. Result of these combined effects is alarmingly poor admission of students in engineering institutions, particularly in distance private colleges far off from the state capitals. The AICTE, New Delhi has put large number of such institutions in the list of possible closure or no-admission category. In this backdrop, this brief write up outlines some of the glaring facts that are plaguing engineering education in reality nowadays.Keywords

One of the parameters that affect machining is heat generated in the machining. Heat generation is the main reason to various thermal damages and wear. Many techniques have been developed to control the generation of heat. Many alternatives have been used to minimize the effect of this heat generation. The reduction in the temperature rise due to this heat generation can improve the product quality in machining. One of these arrangements is that the cutting fluid can be applied at high pressure through the hole inside the tool. There is micro scaled heat transfer in the hole. The improvement of this micro scaled heat transfer in the hole inside the tool would be done by reengineering the geometry of this hole. The uses ofthe meandering micro channel used in other engineering areas seem to be effective forthe geometry ofthe hole.Keywords

In the continuous evolving manufacturing industry, titanium is considered as one ofthe vital materials due to its superior properties; however, grinding of titanium is quite a challenging that demands crucial attention in order to improve its applicability. Present article deals on the effects of varying coolant concentration while grinding of Ti-6AI-4 V. The mode of coolant delivery adopted is drop-by-drop using infusion tube. The grinding performance is analysed using several relevant parameters like grinding force, grinding ratio, average surface roughness, ground surface quality, chip morphology, etc. The results suggest that grinding performance improves with increasing concentration of coolant in cutting fluid.Keywords

The present work is devoted to investigate mechanical properties viz. compressive and impact properties of date palm Fibre Reinforced Polyester (FRP). Date palm fibre is found around date fruits and at the bottom of each leaf, that is used as fuel in rural areas. Premier grade industrial Isophthalic polyester resin is used as the matrix. Date Palm Fibre is chemically treated with sodium hydroxide (NaOH) for better adhesion. Results reveal that with an addition of fibre content, the compressive load bearing capacity increases. However, impact strength is not significantly increased with fibre content. Low to medium impact composites can be developed by date palm FRP. This investigation is expected to assist making FRP commodity with reduced cost utilizing agricultural waste.Keywords

Burrs are formed during various machining processes. These burrs result in difficulty in assembling operations. Being sharp, burrs may injure operators, cause electric short circuit problem, poor aesthetics of component, etc. So, deburring is commonly required to remove burrs. In the present work, drilling burrs formed on low alloy steel workpieces are tried to be removed by electro discharge machining. Electrolytic copper of 16.88 mm diameter is used as EDM tool which is made cathode and workpiece as anode. Parameters varied are peak current and pulse-on time whereas parameters such as duty factor, sparking time, lifting time, sensitivity, anti arcing, sparking gap voltage are kept constant. Peak currents are varied in the range of 4A-10A, and 50 ps, 100 ps, and 200 ps pulse-on time are taken. Initially sparking is found to be concentrated in a small area since only the burrs are attacked by the tool. When sparking spreads to the whole periphery of the tool, it indicates complete burr removal. The time taken for complete burr removal and surface roughness of specimen after deburring operation is measured. Some thickness loss of specimen has also been observed. Deburring time is found to be reduced with increase in peak current and pulseon time. At smaller values of peak current and pulse-on time, surface roughness and thickness loss are lower, but deburring time increases due to low energy of spark, which results in less heat generation and lesser melting and evaporation of burrs. Small depth of crater formed at low peak current and pulse-on time may be responsible for lower surface roughness. Parameters are optimized in order to obtain minimum deburring time, thickness loss and surface roughness.Keywords

Inventory control technique is widely employed in every manufacturing organization and ABC analysis is traditionally used for selective inventory control in a supply chain, or in the production system. The main purpose of ABC analysis is to classify stock keeping units to control the high value, medium value and low value items. ABC analysis concentrates quantities of inventory items and inventory values only. Different criteria such as lead time and criticality of inventory items may be initiated to manage the inventory items in a better way. Since consideration of those criteria is impossible for ABC inventory control technique, different multi criteria based inventory control techniques are applied to manage stock items. In this article, selective ABC inventory control technique has been applied to manage inventory items of a pump manufacturing organization situated in the Eastern region of India. Procurement lead time for a stock item plays an important role in supply chain as well as production also. So, lead time criterion in different inventory control strategies ensures an appropriate inventory management system. An AHP based Multi Criteria Inventory Control (MCIC) technique has been adapted regarding different criteria, such as quantities of inventory items, inventory values and lead time criteria to manage inventory items of the pump manufacturing organization. This MCIC model is a weighted linear optimization technique, termed as ‘R-model’. To evaluate the performance of conventional ABC analysis and R-model, a comparison is drawn based on the safety stock inventory cost and fill rate of the inventory items. The entire investigation is capable to find out the cost effective inventory control technique.Keywords

Weld bead geometry plays significant role in quality of weld joint or clad layer or overlays. Heat input implies great impact in formation of weld bead. Weld bead geometry comprises components such as bead width, reinforcement height and penetration depth and some shape factors such as PSF (penetration shape factor) and RFF (reinforcement form factor). In present experiment, weld beads were produced on E350 low alloy steel with flux-cored E2209 T01 duplex stainless steel by gas metal arc welding using 100% C02 as shielding gas. Process parameters such as welding current and welding voltage were varying in nine times, keeping electrode holder speed constant so that nine different heat input have been generated those created nine weld bead samples. Visual inspection suggests continuous bead with moderate spatter. Macro structure results revealed that at increased heat input weld bead width and reinforcement height increased. On the other hand depth of penetration did not response with increase in heat input appreciably. On the whole, heat input influences weld bead profile parameters to a great extent. Within the experimental domain, large heat input increases weld bead width and height, but cannot change weld bead penetration significantly.Keywords

Employing conventional machining operations in material removal type manufacturing processes for processing difficult-to-machine hard materials through some ways and means is the focus of research by machining research groups across the globe since long. This gives considerable advantages over the grinding process in terms of higher material removal rate, better surface integrity of the work surface, etc., although grinding is commonly used for material removal of quite hard materials along with their finishing. In this paper, machinability of hard AISI 4340 steel is explored employing groove-type chip breaking coated carbide inserts under various cutting velocity and feed at dry condition. Hardened AISI 4340 is considered to be a difficult-to-machine material, and hence, recommendable machining conditions need to be found out. Favourable flat continuous chip is acquired at a cutting velocity of 231 m/min and at a feed of 0.08 mm/rev. At 391 m/min cutting velocity, cutting edges are detected to have worn-out quite fast.Keywords

In present days of high speed machines and machinery, the aim to reduce the energy loses becomes a major aspect of research for economic reasons and long-term reliability. It is known that an industrial nation can save about 1% of gross national product by better tribological exercises. Many modern machines use porous bearings for its ability to act as a lubricant reservoir. The lubricant used in the open adverse operating situations gets contaminated with worn-out particles and dust, and can be better studied by micropolar lubrication theory. Moreover, machined surfaces always have some degree of roughness which adds to the loss of energy. The present work aims at clubbing the effect of roughness in hydrodynamic lubrication using micropolar fluid with a thin porous bush assuming the velocity slip of lubricant film at the porous bush and fluid film junction. The governing equation for fluid pressure in the porous matrix and hydrodynamic film zone are developed following Darcy’s equation and hydrodynamic micropolar lubrication theory, considering Christensen’s stochastic model of roughness. The bearing is approximated as a short one. Modified Reynold’s equation is numerically solved to compute fluid film pressure in steady-state condition. Friction parameters and non-dimensional load capacity in terms of roughness parameters and porous bearing characteristics are presented in case of Newtonian and micropolar fluids.Keywords
