Abstract

The present work stud1ies the effect of viscous dissipation on the limiting value of Nusselt number for a laminar shear-driven flow of Newtonian fluid between two infinite parallel plates. In order to make the flow occur, both the plates are assumed to move in the axial direction at a constant speed. The study considers the flow to be hydro-dynamically fully developed, while both the plates are kept at unequal constant temperatures. A few assumptions, which are commonly employed in the literature, are considered only to obtain the solution in an analytical framework. In order to delve deep into the effect of viscous hearting on the thermal transport characteristics of forced convective heat transfer, the closed-form expressions of limiting Nusselt numbers are evaluated in terms of the Brinkman number. The study concentrates on the viscous dissipation with the heat transfer characteristics, and, thus, emphasis is given to the viscous heating arising out of the movement of both the plates relative to each other. The effects of the viscous heating and degree of asymmetric wall heating on the heat transfer characteristics are found to be significant following the variation of the Nusselt number. The variation of Nusselt number portrays the existence of the point of singularities at different locations. The point of singularity, as seen on the variation, is the outcome of the equilibrium between the heat generated owing to the viscous heating and the heat supplied by the wall.

Abstract

The riverbank erosion mechanism is very complex, and sediment particles on the riverbank are subjected to a number of forces. Among those forces, the force of cohesion between the particles plays a very significant role. Also important is the viscous force coming into play due to the presence of water-bridge between each pair of particles. Frequency of bank failure is proportional to the erosion rate and bank failure causes flood. Every particle is surrounded by a family of similar particles, and all are bound together under this force of cohesion. In this paper, a recently published analytical model named the ''Truncated Pyramid Model'' for the arrangement of particles has been used, and the general equations for the impending acceleration, as well as the escape velocity, of a particle have been modified to accommodate the viscous force. The effect of the forces on a soil particle is presented graphically for pure water. The graphs depict the deviation from results of the previously published research work due to the consideration of the viscous force. The escape velocity of a particle is the key to determining the other parameters related to riverbank erosion, such as the entrainment rate and the volumetric rate of bank erosion.

Abstract

As the technology advances by leaps and bounds, engineering education needs to keep pace with it. Students pursuing engineering education require making themselves fit for the industry. This is not possible unless the faculty members are knowledgeable enough about what is happening around them. At the same time, population is expanding and that aggravates the problem to a great extent. A recent study finds a meager 6% of the total engineering graduates in India to be actually employable. This is an alarming situation as it will affect the corporate world as well as the socio-economic fabric of the country. It is the need of the hour to search for a probable solution.

Abstract

National Conference on Trends and Advances in Mechanical Engineering (TAME 2019) was organised during 15-16 February 2019 in Kalyani Government Engineering College, Kalyani, West Bengal, as a part ofthe Centenary Celebration of The Association of Engineers, India. The conference was an outcome of combined effort of The Association of Engineers, India, Kalyani Government Engineering College, Kalyani and Global Institute of Management and Technology, Krishnagar. More than sixty technical papers, apart from keynote speeches and invited lectures, were presented in the two-day conference. The conference consisted of parallel technical sessions on Manufacturing Technology (Machining, Grinding), Thermal and Fluid Engineering (two sessions), Management and Optimisation Techniques, Manufacturing Technology (Manufacturing, Robotics, Non-Traditional Machining), Manufacturing Technology (Welding), Applied Mechanics and Design Applications, and Materials Engineering. It was inaugurated on the morning of the 15^th amidst a pleasant ambience of Kalyani in presence of luminaries from the academia.
