The aim of this study was to find out the correlation of BMI with per cent body fat and applicability of BMI in predicting malnutrition in field studies and compare the per cent body fat obtained from the conventional Siri's predictive equation for general population and with Goel's equation for Asian Indians on a group of Indian adults. A total of 420 adults, belonging to different Body Mass Index category as per WHO selected from Kochi in Kerala State of India formed the study sample. Body fat per cent calculated from body density using Siri's equation were 14.9, 24.0±5.2 and 30.5±6.7 respectively for underweight, normal and overweight males whereas for female the respective values were 22.3±2.8, 32.3±5.6 and 39.2±6.6. The per cent body fat obtained by Goel's equation was 12.9±3.5, 21.8±3.2 and 35.7±9.9 for underweight, normal and overweight respectively. For their female counterparts the respective values were 20.1±3.3, 32.3±4.0 and 45.2±7.6. Statistical analysis showed significant association between BMI and PBF obtained from Siri's predictive equation and Goel's equation. Goel's equation was found to be highly correlated to BMI (r = 0. 854, p<0.01). This study indicated the applicability of BMI in determining the percentage undernutrition and overnutrition at the field level and the new prediction equation for Asian Indians by Goel is more valid for the selected population when compared with the Siri's equation.Keywords

Nutritional status is a criticai determinant of athietic performance'. Maintenance of proper nutrition and meeting the needs of the players with regard to energy, protein, fat, minerals and vitamins are crucial and these nutrient needs are higher for athletes. An athlete's dietary regimen plays a vital part in accomplishing his/her goals because it allows the athlete to reach his/her maximum performance. Though sports nutrition has made rapid progress, information has not percolated to target groups namely the coaches, trainers and athletes themselves. Various studies indicate that as the athletes' knowledge increases, nutritional quality of food choices improves. Athletes are inadequately informed about nutrition and many think about nutrition only during the season of sports, whereas proper nutrition is a year round task. Other common myths, some of which are potentially harmful are disproportionately high intake of proteins especially animal proteins (for weight lifters), vitamins and mineral intake in excess of RDA, poorly designed weight gain or loss programme and various food fads.- Effect of Nutrition Education on Kap of Pregnant Women

Vitamin A Deficiency (VAD) is a problem of public health significance in India. Clinical VAD is prevalent at two digit levels in some parts of the country. Night blindness from VAD is common among pregnant women especially during the later half of pregnancy. Nearly six lakh women die from child birth related disorders each year, a vast majority from complications which could be reduced by the provision of vitamin A. Nutrition of the early childhood is of paramount importance because the foundation for life time health, strength and intellectual vitality is laid during this period. In India, Protein Energy Malnutrition (PEM) among children under five years still constitutes a major public health problem. Poor infant feeding and weaning practices are major contributory factors in malnutrition especially among the under fives. Weaning diets of the low income families are often cereal gruels or regular family diet with or without small quantities of pulses thus inadequate in both calories and proteins. As a result, prevalence of PEM along with other micronutrient deficiencies is the order of the day. Inadequate dietary intake of vitamin A is the primary cause of vitamin A deficiency and the long term strategy aims at promotion of production and consumption of vitamin A rich foods. Green leafy vegetables are the cheapest and locally available foods rich in provitamin A carotenoids. Apart from the well-known conventional greens, leaves of large number of plants growing wild in the country side could also prove to be good source of beta carotene. Rapid loss of beta carotene on processing and storage of vegetables has also been reported. Vitamin A under-nutrition is a global health problem and is the major cause of preventable blindness in many developing countries including India, Bangladesh and Nepal. Dietary interventions of including beta carotene rich foods seem to be the surest way of improving the vitamin A nutrition of individuals. Though Indian diets are based mainly on cereals, pulses, green leafy and other vegetables, deficiency of vitamin A may be attributed to the inadequate consumption of carotene rich foods and bioavailability of beta carotene from dietaries. Hence efforts are needed to find out the consumption pattern of carotene rich foods in Coimbatore district. Towards this effort, the present study was undertaken to find out the type of carotene rich foods like green leafy vegetables, other vegetables and fruits consumed in Coimbatore district, frequency of consumption, cooking methods adopted and oils used for cooking.- Book Review

Good nutrition is an indispensable component of healthy life. It is the common denominator for healthy growth of mind and body. The nutritional status of a country on a macro level, and in different strata of the population on micro level, depends on the growth of population, production and distribution of foods, nutrition knowledge of the population, purchasing power of the masses, and various other socioeconomic factors. Specialists from the world over agree that the basic cause of coronary heart disease is atherosclerosis, which results from a series of changes in the intima of arteries caused by total accumulation of fatty material and fibrous tissue, disrupting its normal architecture. The risk of developing coronary heart disease is positively correlated with the level of serum cholesterol, which can be successfully reduced or controlled by dietary modifications alone. Dietary protein has been recognised for its ability to alter plasma cholesterol levels. While few studies have been reported to evaluate the effect of pulses on serum cholesterol levels the effect of processed legumes need a great deal of exploration. The present study was undertaken to evaluate the effect of raw and roasted Bengal grahi in lowering the serum cholesterol and triglyceride level and histopathological alterations of the heart, aorta and liver on albino rats.- How to Write and Publish a Scientific Paper

Nutrition education of the families is a crucial need to bring about nutritional improvement. A majority of the young children in India grow in environments which hamper their development. Their tradition bound parents are led by the socio religious norms of behaviours and practices, in the case of their children. Mankind still struggles to bring the population food supply equation into balance. The lack of balance of the vital nutritive elements, especially, protein seems to be critical in developing countries. In India where protein malnutrition forms a major public health problem, about 30 per cent of the protein supplies are derived from vegetable sources. Vegetable proteins offer perhaps the only practical means of solving the problem of protein shortage in India for the present. Certain types of processing of legumes have been found to improve protein quality. Information in this line for legumes commonly consumed in India, is inadequate. Hence, this investigation was undertaken to evaluate the protein quality of sprouted, roasted and autoclaved Bengal gram (Cicer arietinum), green gram (Phaseolus aureus) and horse gram (Dolichos biflorus), which are the three commonly consumed legumes of South India.- Nutrition

This book is a practical guide book to the intracutaneous provocative-neutralizing method of food allergy management. The basic principle underlying this method is that in the first instance there is a diagnostic part to this method which consists of production of symptoms by giving an intracutaneous injection of a provoking dose of the food extract, thereby relieving these symptoms by giving successive intracutaneous injections of other dilutions of the same food extract, until the neutralizing dose is found.
