Abstract

The Human populations are exposed occupational and environmentally to carcinogens, and develop tissue damage and alterations in the genetic background, which will vary from individual to individual within the populations. The environmental pollutants and toxins such as carbon tetra chloride mainly produce tissue damage. Tissue damage is primarily triggered by free radical produced by the pollutants and toxins, which is also responsible for lipid peroxidation of the organelles of the cell and consequent breakdown of their biological functions.

Abstract

The challenge of chemotherapy is to produce effective tumour killing with minimum impact on normal tissues. Global estimates indicate that over three-fourth of the population cannot afford the products of western pharmaceutical industry and have to rely upon traditional medicines which are mainly derived from plants. Within the next decade or two, cancer is likely to become one of the leading causes of death. However, the bulk of cancer should be preventable because most of its causes are available.

Abstract

Cancer is a genetic disease, arising from an accumulation of mutations that promote clonal selection of cells with increasingly aggressive behaviour. An individual who carries a mutant allels of an inherited cancer gene has a variable risk of cancer that is influenced by the particular mutation, other cellular genes and dietary, lifestyle and environmental factors. However cancer is largely a preventable disease. There are several protective agents in our diet including fiber, vitamins, certain minerals and non-nutrients which protect our body from carcinogens.

Iron deficiency anemia is a world wide nutritional problem. The magnitude of this problem is much greater in India than in other developed countries. Abstract

Iron deficiency anaemia is a chronic nutritional problem of world wide proportion. In India, among the causative factors of anaemia, dietary iron is of considerable significance. The main sources of iron in the Indian diets are cereals, pulses, vegetables, condiments and spices. Both pulses, and grains are fairly good sources of iron. The prevalence of iron deficiency anaemia therefore in the majority of Indians is paradoxical. The suggestive causes for this situation are a low availability of dietary iron apart from the iron deficiency due to infestations of gastro-intestinal tract and other diseases which either enhance or aggravate the condition.

Abstract

Crude fibre is the fraction of a plant food remaining after the food had been boiled sequentially, first in acid and then in alkali. This measurement was introduced in the first half of the 19th century for veterinary and not human purposes and measured only part of the cellulose and part of the lignin. In 1975, Trowell introduced the term 'dietary fibre' to describe that part of plant food that traverses the small intestine and is not digested by the endogenous secretions within it.
