A few reports are available on the influence of dietary protein on the formation of collagen. The rate of formation of collagen in animal body was found to be decreased due to protein deficiency. Significant reduction in the collagen content of human skins was observed in kwashiorkor. The synthesis of skin collagen was found to decrease considerably in rats fed with low protein or protein free diets, while diets higher in protein than needed did not increase the synthesis of collagen. Recently Vasantha observed a higher hexosamine/collagen ratio in skins of protein calorie deficient rats.- Protective Action of Certain Vitamins against Experimental Osteolathyrism in Albino Rats
