The discovery that vrtamin-E (Tocopherol), a component of the unsaponifiable fraction of lipids serves as a major anti-oxidant has led to repeated evaluation studies on the tocopherol content of edible oils using newer techniques ranging from chromatographic studies to simple colorlmetric analysis. The interest in vitamin-E stems from various studies that point to its role as an antioxidant that prevents the oxidation of polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA) and phospholipids thereby helping to maintain the integrity of cellular membranes.- Book Review

Edible vegetable oils are important constituents of Indian diets. Despite the increased production of vegetable oils in the country, the gap between demand and supply has been widening due to increase in population and rise in income levels resulting in large imports mainly of palm oil. As a long term arrangement, to become self sufficient, efforts are undertaken to cultivate oil palm, the most efficient producer of edible oil/ha. About 5000 tonnes of carotenoids and vitamin E rich raw palm oil of indigenous origin find its end use only as an Industrial oil. India is one of the developing countries in which both dietary energy and vitamin A deficiencies are prevalent. Iron deficiency anaemia is a chronic nutritional problem of world wide proportion. In India, among the causative factors of anaemia, dietary iron is of considerable significance. The main sources of iron in the Indian diets are cereals, pulses, vegetables, condiments and spices. Both pulses, and grains are fairly good sources of iron. The prevalence of iron deficiency anaemia therefore in the majority of Indians is paradoxical. The suggestive causes for this situation are a low availability of dietary iron apart from the iron deficiency due to infestations of gastro-intestinal tract and other diseases which either enhance or aggravate the condition.- Book Review

Surveys conducted by National Nutrition Monitoring Bureau suggested that riboflavin is one of the most limiting nutrients in Indian diets. Riboflavin intake was only 50 to 60 per cent of the recommended allowance particularly in population where rice is staple. Recent studies on dietary intake of rural school children of Hyderabad had revealed the deficiency of energy and vitamins particularly vitamin A, thiamine and riboflavin. Riboflavin deficiency in humans might lower some psychomotor performances. Prolonged B complex vitamin supplement to rural school boys of Hyderabad, could not normalise the riboflavin status in 50 percent of the children examined, but the selective psychomotor testing revealed beneficial effects of vitamin supplements on armhand steadiness test. Hence an attempt was made to find out the impact of riboflavin supplementation on growth, red cell riboflavin and arm-hand steadiness.- Calcium in Human Biology
