Abstract

From the nutritional standpoint, children in the age range one to five years, who constitute over 15 per cent of the population, are the most vulnerable group. Forty per cent of the mortality in India are in this segment.

Abstract

Protein-calorie malnutrition is one of the distressing nutritional disorders of childhood in the developing countries. Seventy per cent of Indian children of preschool age suffer from protein-calorie deficiency.

Abstract

Diet surveys carried out by Belavady and Shankar have revealed that the food intake of nursing mothers are low in calories, protein and calcium. A high incidence of anaemia, deficiency of vitamin B complex and hypoproteinemia have been reported among Indian mothers by Das Gupta, Rao et al and Subrahmanyam et al.
