In view of the key role of population literacy in national development, several literacy improvement programmes have been undertaken by the Government. According to 1981 census, literacy rates in the country are still low, the average figure being 36.1 per cent (male 46.7 and female 24.9 per cent). Apart from low rates of enrolment in schools the dropout rate of students is high even in the primary stage of school education. Our national averages of students reaching classes II and V are 73 and 29 per cent respectively.- Health and Nutrition Education in Primary Schools

Anthropometric indices like height and weight are frequently used in the evaluation of nutritional status and growth performance of infants and children. For proper interpretation of these data, correct assessment of the ages of the children is a pre-requisite. It is the general experience of field workers that assessment of correct ages of children, specially in rural communities is beset with difficulties since documentary evidence of dates of birth is rarely kept. Also, due to ignorance and illiteracy, many mothers in rural areas are unable to recall the dates of birth of their children. However, they are often able to provide information regarding the birth of the child in relation to some local event or festival.- Calorie Intake of Preschool Children When Fed Ad Lib
