The onset of the first menstrual period, the menarche, is generally taken as a sign that the girl has reached sexual maturity. It marks the mature state o f the uterine development. Menarche is however only a single event in the combination of physical changes which constitute puberty. There appears to be a trend of decreasing age at menarche world wide.
