Adolescence is one of the most exciting yet challenging periods in human development.Adolescents aged between 10 to 19 years account for more than 1/6th of World's population and 22 per cent of the Indian population, ie, 230 million Indians are adolescents in the age group of 10 to 19 years'. Iron requirements are increased during adolescence for the deposition of lean body mass, increase in red cells volume and to support iron lost during menstruation among females. Increased needs for iron, combined with low in take of dietary iron, places adolescent females at risk for iron deficiency and anaemia.
