The measurement and interpretation of growth in childhood has become one of the most widespread instruments for assessing individual and community health and nutritional status. The resultant proliferation of charts, reference values and systems of classification has given rise to confusion in health services as to which is the most desirable for local use, as well as for regional and international comparison.
