It has been estimated that in less developed countries like India approximately one to three per cent of preschool children are afflicted with severe forms of protein-energy malnutrition (PEM)-marasmus and kwashiorkor. Several clinical and biochemical distinguishing features of these two forms of PEM have been reported.
